@denpa_books panel time @animenyc!
Ed was originally thinking of just talking about all the supply chain at this one (which I would have loved personally!) - but he’s also got a lot of cool news and announcements to make!
Updates! Emiya Family volume 4 had been on the back burner for two years because of pandemic problems, (they were working on it when TAa was here two years ago!) but is finally being shipped to the printers!
Denpa’s best selling title, Kaiji! Volume 5 is currently being lettered!
Ed’s personal favorite, Heavenly Delusion! Next volume off to the printers, should be out in February!
Pleasure and Corruption, Denpa’s surprise pandemic hit and their third best selling title!
Girl with the Sanpaku Eyes - huge hit at B&N, wiped them out of volume 1, which is now in its third printing!
Denpa’s Shuzo Oshimi exclusives! Been in the works since before the pandemic. Only 500 copies each, only being sold at ANYC! Extras leftover after the con may be sold online, but only in the US. Fear not though - eventually they’ll be compiled in an Oshimi short story collection!
The Men Who Created Gundam is completely done, but is being held up by Sunrise, who is taking their sweet time reviewing it (to Ed’s audible chagrin 😂).
Panpanya’s Guyabano Holiday is coming closer to Fall 2022 at this point.
Vampeerz is moving relatively quickly, should be going to print soon. Appeal is self-explanatory - Yuri vampires sell themselves. 🔥
Under Ninja is close to the editorial process, going to be done at a new printer in Hong Kong, aiming for a late spring release.
New announcements! 🔥
Moto Hagio’s They Were Eleven gets at first a solitary woot and then, after some prodding, much applause for the living legend! First time it will all be in English, will be in partial color. Aiming for a winter 2022 release.
March also gets an applause from the crowd! Unfortunately, Ed’s been having trouble finding a translator for March because of all the hardcore shogi essays in it. There’s also no digital files for it, so the localization process is even more difficult.
Denpa now fully runs their BL-focused sister company, Kuma Pub, giving them greater access to distributors and publishers. Upping their yearly releases from 2 new books to 8.
Of these, You are my Happiness and The Song of Yoru & Asa are available to purchase at the Denpa booth at least a month ahead of their public release!
“ZomBL” manga - Boys of the Dead!
Other upcoming Kuma Pub releases!
Fakku has licensed the long popular BDSM manga Nana & Kaoru and will be releasing it in 3-in-1 omnibuses!
Supply chain & industry talk! Some manga publishers are up 100-180% from previous years. Denpa is 140% up from 2019. Publishers couldn’t forecast the growth and printing demand during the pandemic.
Some publishers have upped their printing runs for some books, gridlocking printers on a select few titles, exacerbated by the fact there are fewer printers available now. Also delivery problems - not enough truck drivers for instance. Failures in the supply chain cause backups.
Q&A! Getting the license to Kaiji was as easy as asking for it. If they had to commit to the whole thing they wouldn’t have done it, but luckily they can do it arc by arc, and it’s paid off as they’re best seller.
Squid Game has not upped Kaiji sales much, but has slightly helped when describing/pitching the series to retailers to convince them to take more units.
Q&A! They’re an author-focused publisher, they keep tabs on artists who they want to publish and look for opportunities to work with them. Content wise they’re open to everything besides isekai - Ed hopes to never license an isekai. 😂
Q&A from @microwaevy! There was one guest invite opportunity that didn’t happen because the publisher’s demands for the artist were too difficult to accommodate. But they’re hoping to bring more artists over as guests in the future.
