Giving a history of Dark Horse’s relationship with publishing manga. Dark Horse started doing manga in 88, Viz was founded just a year before in 87. Contrary to what some younger fans may think, Manga localization was happening before the internet!

1983’s YamatoCon was probably the first anime con. Even before that, Nagai and Tezuka were guests at SDCC in 1980. Nagai is planning to write a manga about that experience soon! Anime and manga has had a long, historied international fandom.

Shigeru Mizuki loved Hellboy and Japanese editions of the series contain forwards by him. Mizuki loved western comic books in general, EC comics and stuff like Superman and Plastic Man were huge influences on him.

American comics have influenced manga for a long time. Lupin III creator Monkey Punch once said that “Mad Magazine was the REAL manga” 🤣

The much lauded Eizouken, named by the NYT and other publications as one of the best tv shows of 2020. The manga is an intensive localization effort because of all its text and detail.

Eizouken volume 4 is coming out soon and will continue the story past the anime. It will introduce the Anime club, the rivals of the Animation club, who are all modeled after famous anime directors!
