“If you think he’s illegal, we can make him disappear.”
Yesterday the Washington Post released a bombshell report on Trump's ICE contracts. What they uncovered is horrifying, and absolutely worth reading in full.
Here are three crucial takeaways:
washingtonpost.com/investigations…
1. The police departments who've partnered with ICE through these contracts are the worst of the worst.
Joe Arpaio loves the 287(g) program. Sheriff Terry Johnson does too, because he thinks Mexican's "values are a lot different — their morals — than what we have here.”
2. These contracts don’t just lead to immigrants being torn from their family. They also create a climate of fear, terrorizing entire communities.
Every trip outside the house becomes a nightmare: “The moment I put the keys in the engine, I’m risking not seeing my mama anymore.”
Racial profiling is rampant: “Officers would target people that were Hispanic and Latinx from the community. It wasn’t just violent crime — it was anything.”
And so many undocumented people are terrified to seek help, even when their lives are in danger:
"In January, a leak of liquid nitrogen at a poultry processing plant killed six people... Several of the victims were undocumented, and survivors, also undocumented, were afraid to seek medical help or assist in the investigation.”

3. Biden & DHS Secretary Mayorkas are breaking their explicit promise to cancel Trump’s ICE contracts, and they don't want to admit it.
To quote WaPo: "Biden promised during his campaign to end the Trump administration’s historic use of 287(g), but no plan has been announced."
ACLU deputy legal director @WangCecillia: “The Biden administration is walking back its campaign promise.”
And the admin's response to this devastating article?
“A spokesperson for Biden did not respond to a request for comment.”
We can't let them keep pretending this issue doesn't exist.
Biden promised, in writing, to cancel Trump's ICE contracts. And DHS Secretary Mayorkas could follow through with the stroke of a pen tomorrow, if he wanted to.
So we're not going to stop.
On Monday, December 6th, we'll be back in the streets of DC to send a simple message to Biden and Mayorkas: #KeepYourPromises on immigration, and #CancelTheContracts. If you're in or near DC, sign up to join us!
