According to Giffords, "New Mexico’s gun death rate, the fourth-highest in the country, has not yet caught up to its recently strengthened gun laws."

Maryland's excuse: "The state has the 23rd-lowest gun death rate and imports guns used in crimes from other states at the highest rate in the country."

"Colorado has stronger gun laws than many states, but still has significant room for improvement."

"In recent years, Nevada has made significant progress in its gun safety laws, but the state can still do much more to save lives from gun violence."

"While Oregon has enacted several basic gun safety laws, the state has significant room for improvement."

Conversely: "New Hampshire lacks many basic gun safety laws and has the 14th-lowest gun death rate in the country."
