Excellent @chronicle webinar "The Mental-Health Crisis on Campus" with Dr. Gary Glass, Ryan Houston-Dial, @DoreenSMarshall, Dr. Michael G. Mason & Dr. Kimberly Quinn - moderated by @AlexanderKafka.
I've *NEVER* seen this amount of questions consistently roll in during a webinar.
This (mental health crisis) has been going on for 10+ years.
We (staff) don’t care any less – and because of that, the burden *feels* even heavier when the narrative is that we can’t handle the demand. - Dr. Gary Glass
We’ve doubled, almost tripled, our staff since I got here – we are still understaffed. - Dr. Michael G. Mason
Doubling & tripling the *amount* of counselors is NOT the “golden” solution. - Dr. Gary D. Glass
...in the words of Dr. Rackley (s/o to SUBR): hint, hint, clue, clue!
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for college students.
At any given time, about 8% of students on a campus have a suicide ideation, with about 2.5% of students having an actual plan. – @DoreenSMarshall of @afspnational
@DoreenSMarshall @afspnational None of the existing nicotine research has prepared us for vaping. We’re seeing freshmen come in who may have already vaped for 4-7 years already, at very extreme levels.
Lots of students who vape, are also using marijuana and drinking heavily. – Dr. Michael G. Mason
We have some students who estimated spending $100 - $180/month on their vaping habit – and for some #firstgen students that can exacerbate issues of food insecurity. - Dr. Michael G. Mason
