On a day like today, December 22nd, 1959, the first official visit of a @POTUS to Spain came to an end. That year, Dwight D. Eisenhower paid a brief visit to Spain. #RespectHispanicHeritage

The visit took place after the signing of the Madrid Pacts of 1953, in which both countries agreed to military collaboration whereby Spain ceded the use of its air bases in Zaragoza, Torrejón de Ardoz, Morón and the naval base at Rota (@NAVSTA_Rota). #RespectHispanicHeritage
Eisenhower's visit was the first of nine by U.S. presidents to Spain, many of them related to military collaboration between the two countries under @NATO. #RespectHispanicHeritage
The rest of the presidents who have visited the country officially have been Gerald Ford (1975), Jimmy Carter (1980), Ronald Reagan (1985), George Bush (1991), Bill Clinton (1995 and 1997), George Bush (2001) and @BarackObama (2016). #RespectHispanicHeritage
The next one will likely take place next year, when @JoeBiden revisits Spain to join the #NATO summit, to be held in Madrid on June 29-30, 2022. #RespectHispanicHeritage
