Among some Shlokas/mantras, Guruji made me (& others) always recite this one. Explaining it in detail.
ॐ सह नाववतु ।
सह नौ भुनक्तु ।
सह वीर्यं करवावहै ।
तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै ।
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

saha nau bhunaktu .
saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai .
tejasvi nāvadhītamastu mā vidviṣāvahai .

Let's start with essence.
सह नाववतु
oṃ saha nāvavatu
It means, may He protect (suraksha/संरक्षण) both of us.
'Us' here can refer to different people in different circumstances. It can refer to Guru and Shishya, Jyotishi and the queriest, king and councillor etc. 3/x
Let's understand why Protection has been prayed for first. Whatever a Guru has to teach, or an advisor has to advise will come from the kitty of time. So Guru/advisor pray that answers are correctly read so that seeker is not harmed by an incorrect interpretation. 4/x
The same way, Guru/advisor also pray that Shishya or seeker has no intention to confuse them by asking irrelevant questions or problems they aren't serious about, & only genuine queries are put to them. Guru/advisor pray that they are not confused and pray for protection. 5/x
