Public hearing in the ITRE Commission of the #EuropeanParliament on the EC proposal for a EU Digital Identity Wallet had place today. 5 experts and many MEPs intervened.
The same experts have raised various remarks and perplexities. The goal of creating an interoperable European digital tool for the identification of citizens and online access to public and private services presents serious concerns and risks 👇🏻
For instance, it’s unrealistic to say that the user will be able to have "full control" of their personal data, as they’ll be forced to provide them in order to log in the essential related services and as a targeted legal protection of the property of sensitive data is missing👇🏻
The questions on the absence of safeguards against possible abuses of the instrument and the discriminatory effects towards citizens who choose not to use it remain unanswered (ultimately considering the #greenpass experience)👇🏻
Furthermore, as usual, the roadmap is absolutely hasty and as we know "haste is the enemy of good" ... we could easily find ourselves trapped in a hellish system that introduces
digital slavery👇🏻
In my speech I stated that WE ARE NOT READY for this innovation if we do not first prepare a regulation that establishes the private individual ownership of personal data and provides adequate safeguards and guarantees also for related rights👇🏻
In particular against:
- abuse of dominant position;
- violation of fundamental rights;
- identity theft;
- digital addiction.
Otherwise, the TRUST of the citizens in this instrument and in the proposing institutions will be less and less. I'll keep my eyes wide open!👁👁
