but for reasons he chooses not to examine, he leaves and simply begins wearing looser robes. he keeps fighting the wen sect. he keeps searching for wwx with jc.

100% he tells NO ONE about the pregnancy and just. thinks if he doesn't mention it no one else will notice or comment. which works really well until he meets his brother. he's not even really showing by that point, but lxc takes one look at him and nearly keels over.

lxc would absolutely say things like 'you have a pregnant glow'

lxc also asks who the father is and lwj is like, i am simply going to walk away from you and refuse to make eye contact

angst 2: wwx learning lwj has no spouse and has a REALLY tarnished reputation now, wwx is so furious about that particularly, like fuck everyone for that

but honestly, let's combine this for max knives: wwx returns. fights w/ lwj who urges him to be cleansed.

wwx notices that lwj is paler, swathed in bigger robes. he doesn't make much note of it.

but he does, eventually, notice that other gentry are shunning lwj. that when lxc is present his smile is sharper, and he is more protective of lwj.

and then finally wwx hears the rumours

it's only when he witnesses wwx using demonic cultivation again that he feels stronger. and that's *terrifying*.

meanwhile, in cloud recesses lan qiren is Not Happy (and also very concerned) but he and the elders have been convinced by lxc to 'let' lwj keep fighting in sunshot. as one of their strongest cultivators, lwj is needed.

it's possible lwj and lqr have a very stilted conversation at some point where lqr expresses that no matter what, lwj is welcome and safe in cr and so is his child (if he wishes to raise it)

just want a moment where... there's a banquet. wwx is avoiding it. he knows he's not wanted there. he's only going to cause the jiang clan more trouble if he's present. he knows how this goes. so he's outside, drinking, alone.

then he sees someone else sitting in the shadows.

lwj is also avoiding the banquet. he has never liked them anyway. in the past, he'd attend then leave as soon as was polite.

now he finds he can't stand the stares. whispers. he regrets nothing but also does not like bringing shame on his family, no matter how they defend him.

what wwx sees is lwj seated with his back to the wall. lwj looks tired. he has one hand around the curve of his belly. he doesn't even look like he's aware of it: that small protective touch.

he looks so alone.

wwx knows how he feels.

wwx says, 'ah, lan zhan!' and smiles. and laughs awkwardly. lwj just... looks at him.

'are you feeling sick?' wwx asks lwj. lwj shakes his head.

'not enjoying the banquet then,' wwx says knowingly. hesitates. 'i'll leave you alone.'

he starts walking away.

'stay,' he hears.

wwx stops and looks back. lwj is looking at him.

'stay,' lwj says again.

slowly, wwx walks back to him. sits down, close to lwj but not touching. not quite.

they say nothing for a long time. the finally, quietly, wwx says, 'you deserve to be in there, lan zhan.'

'i do not wish to be,' lwj says.

silence. finally wwx says gently:

'it's different, choosing not to be there. or having it chosen for you.'

the noise that punches out of lwj is - wounded. and relieved. maybe it helps, being seen.

wwx looks at him. lwj looks so thin. is it healthy, to be so thin, when you're expecting?

'wei ying,' says lan zhan.

'yes?'

'would you like....?'

wwx's hold his breath. this feels precious. fragile. and then he feels the warmth of lwj's skin under his hand. the tautness of his rounded belly.
