Coming from @cefemontpellier/@umontpellier to take part in the ๐ #OneOceanSummit ๐ in #Brest was an incredible opportunity.
Thanks to the organizing team at @UBO_UnivBrest.
Some key takeaways from the summit in a ๐งต.
@Inspire4Nature
Scientific experts, industry leaders, conservation organisations, youth, some political figures, and poets all call on ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ to protect the ocean.
Ocean governance
Multiple calls to get a #BBNJ treaty in 2022.
Need to:
1)overcome fragmented governance in the High Seas
2)Ensure equitable-access to resources.
3)Recognize the @OceanAsCommon
Ocean governance (2/2) should:
1)Be based on scientific evidence โก๏ธ call for an International Platform on Ocean Change
2)Include civil society & listen to coastal communities
3)Strengthen the role of navies: collaboration & better enforcement
@ocean_climate @MarineNationale
Ocean protection 1/4
1)Heard a lot about 30% target but little about strong protection within those sites, when thatโs the most critical part of having effective #MPAs (well-reminded by @JoachimClaudet).
@RemiParmentier thoughts coincided with #OOSUniversityโs call for action:
1)Internationally agree on a definition of protection, based on science
2)Manage sustainably 100% of the ocean (not mentioned by political leaders!)
3)Make marine protection the norm (not the exception)
Ocean protection 4/4
Emanuel Macron announced funds to keep exploring the deep sea. An ambiguous position when France did not vote in favor of a moratorium on deep seabed mining (81 other governments did...) at the @IUCN congress in September.
Polar ocean = main buffer against climate change; incredibly unknown & vulnerable.
2โฃ CCAMLRโs chair @JakobGranit announced wanting to start Marine Spatial Plans in Antarctica to help stalling of negotiations over Antarctic MPAs.
@ASoudanNonault (Republic of Congo) reminded all that there is a lot talking but very little acting.
French Polynesia (@MainaSage, @Edouradfritz) & Pacific island states' voices were heard: a vision where the land, sea & high seas are a whole. Letโs learn from them.
1)More collaboration between countries & build capacity among partners.
2)Repeated call to head of states to make their ocean data open and freely accessible!
1)Several companies/banks/investors starting to join the movement, blue finance is on the rise.
2)Unfortunately, we were not given a chance to ask questions during the workshop...
1) Several companies calling head of states for legally-binding tools to prevent further pollution and unfair competition.
2) Welcomed commitments from the shipping industry.
1) @EmmanuelMacron called on strengthening the dialog between scientists and decision-makers. The next generation is already here! #OOSUniversity
2) Erik Orsenna: if no actions follow the words, this summit would have been โa threat, a wasteโ. #Weknowenough
