A common myth is that India's greatest universities like Nalanda, Vikramshila, Somapuri, etc. were exclusively Buddhist. On Maha Shivaratri, I present archaeological proof of Shiva sculptures & inscriptions which prove that Hinduism also flourished at these universities

Nalanda (4th c. CE) known as a Buddhist university was founded by devout Hindu King Kumaragupta 1. Destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khalji in 1193 CE, its priceless library burnt over 6 months. Many Hindu images of Vishnu, Surya, Ganesha & Shiva- Parvati like this were discovered here.

Vikramshila, Bihar was a global university destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khalji in 12th c. Although known as a Buddhist Mahavihara, an inscription here shows that there was a Hindu Sri-Sodhila Matha in the complex. Several Hindu images including this Mahakala were discovered there.

Somapuri (Bangladesh 8th c.) built by the Palas was a 27 acre complex with a huge library. Deserted in 12th c. CE after Khalji’s invasions it was known as a Buddhist university, yet 63 stone Hindu sculptures including Shivalingas & Ganeshas unearthed here show Hindu influence.

Such representations of Bhagwan Shiva & other Hindu gods worshipped alongside Buddhist & Jaina icons shows the harmonious coexistence of Bharaitya panths at our ancient universities. This common liberalism was demolished by the destructive advent of savage Islamic invaders.
