Today let’s make a thread about broiler chickens ( chickens for meat) thread…

Firstly you must construct a good house for your chickens. Know the size of the house you will need and how many chickens can it carry. The house should be contracted so that no rats/ birds can enter it. Number on the pictures for houses

2. Know the ratio of feeders and drinkers for your chickens. Eg one feeder can feed 10 to 15 chickens and 1 drinker can accommodate up to 20 chickens.

Inside the house you must put bedding. Normally we use wood shavings , grass, straw, cudbords etc. They help to make sure the house is dry and easy to clean,

It is advisable to start with a small batch of 100 chicks 🐥 for you to learn. We learn from each batch no batch is the same.

You can buy 100 day old chicks 🐥 from R850 to R1300 at your local hatchery. That’s R8.50 each

Broiler chickens fully grow in 6 weeks. 100 chickens will consume 7-8 bags of feed. Your feed supply will give you this guide chart on what to feed your chickens and when. Feed cost R2300 to R2800 for the cycle

Other cost include medication for your chickens: it can cost around R200

Once your chickens reach 4 weeks, you should start marketing them so that once they reach 6 weeks you can sell them as soon as possible. After 6 weeks they will be eating feed (profit) that add up on cost to produce them. Marketing is very important in any business.

1 Chickens Can Cost Around R30 to R36 To Produce. Depending On You Market.

Let's Say You'll Spend R3600 For 100 Birds and It Can Generate Upto R7000. A Profit Of R2800 to R3400. It Depends On The Mortality Rate And How Fast You Can Sell.

Where do you sell your chickens after 6 weeks?Or you can sell from 4 wks

You can sell them to your community for R60-R80, Resellers for R50-R60. You can also sell to slaughter house for R35-R45 for bulk buying. Spar, Roots, and other local butcheries also supports small farmers

You have to learn as much as you can before starting any kind of farming. You can attend short courses at the farm or online. There are many videos on YouTube and on the internet. We are not affiliated with the above training centres. Contact them @BuhlefarmersA

You don't need to go to school to start farming honestly. Our grandparents were living off it so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You just need to read a lit and surround yourself with people in the same line. The best teacher is experience.

If you don’t want too much stress, you can start buying chickens from 4 weeks old from other farmers for R35 -R42. Then you grow them for 2 weeks. They will be 6 weeks and ready for market. Or be a reseller: buy them at 6 weeks and start selling same day. Stock prices are less

It’s always advisable to have a mentor as there are many challenges on the way . Farming when done right is a Gold mine that will make lots of money 💰
