#PAXEast game review thread?

#PAXEast game review thread!

@LEGO_Group Brick Tales was very fun. Like Your basic LEGO game, but the play is a little less forgiving and a little more puzzle oriented which is something I really enjoyed. Both kids did as well.

The last legend of Nostalgia was also pretty fun. I've never played a soulsborne style game which is what this advertises to be but with tongue and cheek humor overlaid. The humor is Stanley Parable light from the demo. Still pretty fun and accessible though. #nostalgia

Have A Nice Death by @GearboxOfficial was super fun. Smooth, fluid, great theming and aesthetic. I think it would remind me of Hollow Knight if had ever played it, But since I haven't, it reminds me of Rogue Legacy (gameplay wise at least). Both kids also approved! Wishlisted.

Snack Attack was adorable! A little like Uno, a lot like Ramen Fury, cute as all get out. My son liked it so much he bought a copy with his own money 😱!!

@Madnetic_Games WWII Rebuider seems like a mellow resource collecting and building game (like Raft or The Forest) but grounded in post world war II England and you're using resources to repair a small village/street damaged in the blitz. I think...fun though. Both kids enjoyed.

Word Heist by @Gamewright was very fun. Both kids enjoyed it although certain liberties needed to be granted for spelling 😁. The group has a pool of letters to build words from and you're trying to give hints to your word but not so much that anyone guesses. Then, PROFIT!

Shifting Stones (also by @Gamewright) was super fun and quick with a surprising amount of strategy. You're trying to arrange the board to match your cards to score points, but anytime you modify the board you have to throw one of your cards away. WHAT. WILL. YOU. DO??

Okay, so I don't really go in for 'chain 3' games OR games with background deck building mechanics But this game uses both and somehow it's a Reese's peanut butter cup situation: They go better together. All in all I really enjoyed this one, as did both kids.@BeRad_Ent #wishlist

Okay, so this? THIS was something very fun! @Snapships Tactics is the first tabletop space game we've ever played and it was great! My son decided to ram me (the pirate!) So I blew him out of the stars!
(I think we accidentally sniped @TychoBrahe's table so very sorry about that)

I thought The Day We Fought Space was okay, but we had to DRAG the kids away. A Gradius style space shooting game bet where you can use touch pinch controls to change your field of fire. Only in iOS unfortunately, so we won't be playing it.

This Mario...inspired game starts with "Push any button you want" and the Marxist humor only ramps up from there. Strong recommend if you are hankerin' for some old school platforming

Me, My Robot, and I (I hope I got that right) by @BadgerHub looks both unique and adorable. A post post-apocalyptic farming sim where all of your farming equipment is rolled up into one hijacked mech. Looks pretty good for only 2 months of development. #PAXEast

Dumpy and Bumpy by @ScreenwaveMedia is like if the dinosaurs from Bubble Bobble we're in a puzzle oriented version of Bomberman. Enough said. I had fun and both kids loved it.

Love 3 (also by @ScreenwaveMedia) looks like Loadrunner and plays like Super Meat Boy light. Precision platforming with some tricks. You can set your own save point wherever and whenever you like adding some strategies to it. Generally fun...but there is a water level 😬

The forest cathedral by @WhitethornGames was...interesting. It reminds me of Abduction, or a puzzle oriented Firewatch You interact with equipment by playing a platforming minigame which was fun. The voice acting was good. There's a mechanic I didn't get but once I ignored it👍

We didn't play One Deck Dungeon by @AsmadiGames here, but we own the physical game and are 181 hrs deep on the Steam version so I wanted to recommend it. Also, kudos to anyone who offers smaller foil pack expansions for their game. Cheap and accessible is appreciated.

My daughter saw @CityBlockBuildr from across the venue and made a beeline for it. Apparently you own a city block 1950s LA and try and develop it in such a way as to maximize your profits. Basic Sim game mechanics, but pleasant 1950s aesthetic.

Hang on, wait a second, they may support NFTs. Double check that before supporting this game 😠

@RescuePetsGame is half Pet Sim (pet the dog, get the coins, upgrade the petting) and half driving resource collector game (dog drives around, collects ore) but...

IT'S WALL TO WALL CORGIS!!!

And they donate a portion of proceeds to a Seattle dog charity! Kids give it 20/10.

Below the Stone by @Apogee_Ent looks like Enter The Gungeon (and controls a little bit like it too) but you explore a dungeon that's partially filled in allowing you to dig into the walls to find secrets and new areas. Humorous dialogue helps set the mood. Fun for me AND kids!

Yum Yum Tropics was an odd duck. A puzzle game about anthropomorphic boat captains delivering produce. It used a 'pull back and launch' type mechanic with the boat bouncing off things. Fun enough, but it lets you redirect at any point really taking the challenge out of it.🤷‍♂️

Yukyo Station was a fun side scrolling beat-em-up/shooter with a great retro edge of cyberpunk aesthetic. Guns aim with the mouse, swords just cut things. You are clearing a train of black goo infested commuters. Fun but got repetitive quick. Hope there is more later

Dwerve by @HalfHumanGames is one of my favorite games at #PAXEast so far. It presents as a retro style isometric RPG like Chrono Trigger but plays like an on-the-go tower defense. You place towers (each with its own upgrade tree) to deal with enemies you find. Super fun!

Son and daughter played @DavigoGame and it was a pretty impressive game. One player in VR is the Giant trying to cross or swat the (up to 4) 'hero' players on PC while they try to shoot the giant with fireworks and cannons! #asynchronousmultiplayer

A video to give you the idea 😁

Plunder Panic was a 4 vs 4 pirate themed party game. Gameplay was fairly standard for the genre but the wind conditions were varied and all over the place and made it fun and hectic.

Not a game, But a device concept: use modular cubes and assorted button modules to build a controller of your own design then map all the buttons yourself. I neet idea, especially if you have a problem with regular controllers. @ByoWave

The D-T.E.A.M. BY @_bottledgames was an interesting arcade style tank game in the vein of Battle zone maybe? With some jumping and ballistic trajectory mechanics. Collect the gold for the honor of the dwarves, Don't blow up. Both kids enjoyed.

Astergos by @tinyBuild looked great but unfortunately the line was a little too long all four days and I never got to play it 😭. But from watching, it plays like Elden Ring but looks more like Horizon Zero Dawn. The combat looked smooth and varied and I can't wait to play.

Since we got shut out of every AL #DnD game, we joined a game of @hecticelectron's Racoons Sky Pirates! You play raccoons taking a trash-built airship to plunder houses in a neighborhood. Very fun. Kids and adults alike had a great time. Heavy on RP w/ dice as a guide. #recommend

Justice Sucks by @tinyBuild was another super fun looking game who's line was always a little too long so I didn't get to try it out. You appear to be a murderous bloodthirsty Roomba protecting your home from burglars and cleaning up the murder-mess. DOESN'T THAT SOUND AWESOME!?!

THEY EVEN HAD ONE IN A CAGE!!!

And speaking of @tinyBuild, their booth at #PAXEast was a real circus. Like, literally! Figuratively too, we didn't get to play many of their games because it was so popular, but you can see why.

They even had a fortune tellers tent (featuring Potion Craft, a game I already have and would definitely recommend)! Also, a bear

... and whack a mole...

...and and a strong man punch bag...

...and and and a claw machine filled with @tinyBuild steam keys and beta access. We won a beta key for Hello Neighbor 2. I understand it's popular but I've never really been into it. Kids are excited though so I guess I'm going to give it a try🤷‍♂️ (would have preferred Astergos😉)
