netflix disabling screenshots was one of the worst decisions its ever made. there used to be jokes about how people making memes out of screenshots was doing more press for netflix shows than netflix actually was. and they were right!
i had originally written a whole thread but it turns out you can just do this so hell yeah
i did have some good points in the original thread about how “X out of context” accounts are better at generating viral content for shows because they arent beholden to being strictly promotional in their copy & have no corporate oversight. but anyway
i just think memes and screenshots should be part of streaming platforms’ promotional strategy instead of the villain. i bet i would be seeing sooo many screenshots of lee pace in foundation if apple tv’s app allowed screenshots
also i say this as someone who has done digital marketing on a few platforms. i am not privy to any kind of viewership data, so this is coming purely from a social engagement POV. but i want people to screenshot stuff!
adding my favorite response to the thread. building in a screenshot function to the app/site interface while still blocking screen recording solves the piracy issue AND allows for shareable screenshots for easy memeing. streaming execs scrolling thru the thread take note!!
at least this can give rise to a new era of dirty laptop screen memes
i love this dm because it is trying to be funny but is exactly what i’m talking about!! all limiting screenshotting does is drive people to alternatives where they CAN get screenshots. thank you Édouard for contributing to the discourse
