For decades researchers have been examining the construct of wellbeing. Yet, few studies have attempted to capture wellbeing as a multi-faceted construct, whose conceptualization may change over time, depending on the perspectives of the current generation of #youth. [2/8]
We conducted a multi-sample mixed method study to develop the Adolescent Wellbeing Paradigm (AWP).
Study 1⃣ An online survey study among Dutch-speaking youth (N = 339) was conducted to inspect which initial AWP-items were viewed as being important for their wellbeing. [3/8]
Study 2⃣ We co-evaluated the original AWP-items and co-created new items with adolescents and young adults (N = 25) via focus groups. This was an iterative process. After each focus group the AWP was being adapted. [4/8]
Study 3⃣ The validity and reliability of the updated AWP was tested (N= 189). PCA revealed five factors: 1) having impact, purpose, and meaning; 2) absence of (excessive) stress; 3) family relationships; 4) self-confidence; and 5) feeling respected, appreciated, and loved. [5/8]
All factors were correlated to well-known validated measures of wellbeing and related constructs. The internal consistency of the items as well as the test-retest #reliability were found to be good. [6/8]
In conclusion, the AWP was found to be a valid and reliable measure of adolescent wellbeing. The AWP captures the essence of how today’s generation youth views wellbeing and which specific components they believe are important for their life. 👏 [7/8]
A big s/o to my amazing colleagues @SuzannevdGroep @R_vdCruijsen @EACrone who supported me on this project. And of course to all the adolescents who shared their views on this tool and on wellbeing in general. A massive thank u 🤗[8/8]
