Day 5: Recipes, laundry day, decorating
A good day as a pro hero is a boring one: filled with good deeds, aimless patrolling and tedious paperwork.
A bad day looks like what Katsuki just survived.
Okay, all things considered, it’s not /that/ bad. He’s walking away with all his limbs intact which is always preferable. And other than his uniform, there were no casualties for the duration of his shift.
…he won’t be able to wear those pants again after they were /shredded/ by that half-pterodactyl woman. Not to mention, the news managed to capture his All Might themed underwear in high definition. They are currently re-running the footage every hour.
Katsuki is going to kill his boyfriend—they don’t belong to him, for gods’ sake! They’re Izuku’s! Really! Why won’t anyone listen to him?!
When Katsuki drags himself through the front door, he’s ready to throw in the towel.
Nothing is going to keep him from passing out immediately and hoping the last twelve hours was just a bad dream.
Nothing except the smell of slightly burnt fish.
“Izuku…?” he calls out hesitantly after toeing off his shoes.
“In here!” comes the alarmed voice of his better half.
Katsuki braces himself as he heads into the kitchen. It’s not on fire yet, but there’s a threatening amount of steam coming from the frying pan.
“That’s on a little high…”
The advice is soundly ignored, but Katsuki knows it’s not on purpose. Izuku has two pots and two pans going at once, and while he’s not a bad cook, it’s too much for him to handle.
Anything with oil in it is hissing and spitting angrily. Everything else is boiling over.
And Izuku himself in panicking.
“Kacchan! How was your—ah! please stop burning, please, I’m begging you—“ The rest of Izuku’s greeting is drowned out as the fire alarm blares to life.
Katsuki sighs heavily and marches over.
He flips everything down to low, removing most of the pans from the red-hot burners.
“Sorry, Kacchan!” Izuku tells him while he flaps a hand towel at the alarm. It cuts off a minute later and Izuku joins him at the stove. “I don’t know what I did wrong…”
This is where Katsuki would normally scold him. He’d rant about the embarrassing incident from before, or just tell him to leave the cooking to him because Izuku doesn’t know what he’s doing.
But then he’d be giving into his exhaustion, projecting his bad mood on a man who’s clearly trying his best to cheer him up. So he lets the last embers of his irritation flicker out, choosing instead to let his adoring boyfriend off the hook.
“Too much at once,” Katsuki replies evenly. He eyes the dishes, surprised by what he sees. Izuku clearly put his best effort into dinner, choosing all of Katsuki’s favorite recipes. It brings a secret smile to his lips, and makes his chest feel light.
The warmth that’s settled there grows as Izuku embraces him from behind, hooking his chin on Katsuki’s shoulder. “…can it be saved?”
Katsuki snorts. “This is me you’re talking about.”
“Of course, then!”
Izuku nods sagely, his curly hair tickling Katsuki’s cheek. “Uhh… you think /I/ can finish it?”
“Why? I can do it.” Katsuki’s exhausted but the meal is close to done already. Besides, he’d rather make sure there’s at least /something/ on the plate.
“You should go take a shower. I’ve got this,” Izuku insists. There’s a hint of nervousness that’s like a dog whistle to Katsuki’s ears; he hears it immediately, perking up.
“You do?” he asks, incredulous.
“Yeah! Yeah, this isn’t so hard!”
He guides Katsuki away from the stove, gently pushing him in the direction of the shower. Katsuki allows it, mostly because he wants to get to the bottom of this new mystery.
“See you in a bit!” Izuku sings, and he is /way/ to fluttery right now,
like a little kid trying to keep a secret.
“Okay.”
Katsuki passes by the dining room and notices a bunch of candles on the table.
“…okay.”
As he moves into the bathroom, he spies a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket on the night stand.
“…okaaaay.”
Izuku is definitely up to something. He’s moved beyond the ‘cheering him up’ stage and right into ‘going to romance the pants off Kacchan’ territory.
What really sends it over the edge is when Katsuki emerges from the bathroom and sees the pile of clean, neatly folded clothes on the bed. Izuku has never folded a shirt in his life, and his messy dresser is proof.
“The hell is going on with the nerd?”
He unfolds his favorite black skull tee and eyes it suspiciously. Nothing. Then he picks up Izuku’s cargo shorts to do the same and everything finally becomes crystal clear...
…A box tumbles out of pocket. A small one, able to fit easily in his hand.
It’s just large enough to hold a ring.
“Holy shit.”
//He’s going to propose…// The thought echoes in his head, chasing out all others. Somewhere in his chest, his heart swells and threatens to burst.
Katsuki stares at the box like it just grew a set of lips and started bad mouthing his mother. He’s stunned, confused and elated all at the same time.
And then he realizes that he can /not/ allow this to happen.
“No way in hell is he beating me to it!”
Energy restored, Katsuki scrambles to his sock drawer, digging around furiously for the box he has hidden in its depths. When he can’t find it immediately, he overturns the entire thing, sending the drawer accidentally hurtling to the floor, where it thuds loudly.
“Kacchan?”
The sound of plates banging together a room away halts.
“Shit!” Katsuki dashes to the closet, rooting around inside. He can hear footsteps on the floorboards, moving closer as he races to find what he’s looking for. “Stay away!”
“Kacchan, what are you—“ Izuku starts to ask as he enters their bedroom. But then he’s too busy trying to block the incoming object that Katsuki just hurled at him.
“It’s for you!” Katsuki shouts.
Izuku catches it smoothly, holding it up. He tilts his head. “A poster?”
“Unroll it,” Katsuki demands, straightening up and moving closer.
“You got this for me? That’s so nice! I hope it’s the new Kamui Woods—“ He suddenly yelps, nearly dropping it. Clearly displayed on the picture of the two of them are the words ‘Will You Marry Me?’
And when Izuku’s eyes dart over to him, he finally notices that Katsuki is down on one knee.
“Ah! Wait! Hold on! This was my idea first!” Izuku exclaims, voice climbing higher and higher.
His gaze flicks around frantically until he locates the box he clearly intended to give Katsuki tonight, still on the bed. “One second!”
“Don’t you dare!”
They both dive for it at the same time. After a short wrestling match, they both agree at the same time, too.
Katsuki can’t think of a better way to end the best day of his life—eating a cold dinner in bed, surrounded by messy piles of laundry…next to his future husband.
