Izuku leaves his village one morning, the intention in his heart pure and unwavering. He knows without a shadow of a doubt that it will be the last time he ever lays eyes on his home again. No more early mornings under a sky painted in golds and pinks. No more sneaking out and borrowing a horse for an afternoon ride. No more evenings curled up, drinking thick stew to warm his bones.

A good day as a pro hero is a boring one: filled with good deeds, aimless patrolling and tedious paperwork.

A bad day looks like what Katsuki just survived. Okay, all things considered, it’s not /that/ bad. He’s walking away with all his limbs intact which is always preferable. And other than his uniform, there were no casualties for the duration of his shift.

Honestly? He quit paying attention to Izuku the moment they began their hasty escape on dragonback. Katsuki’s mind is preoccupied with trying to figure out how those bandits got the drop on them in the first place. That and visualizing all the close calls they barely managed to survive.

Day 2: grocery shopping

There’s an unusual buzz in the grocery store tonight.

Typically, any kind of energy this late is unheard of. Most people just slog through their daily chore, too exhausted by the odd hour to notice much other than the food items in front of them. Katsuki is one of those people, drowsy and fatigued. But he’s also a pro hero, highly attuned to subtle shifts in the environment around him.

If you’re a rookie? A trial doesn’t begin to describe it. It’s more of a baptism by fire, an anointment in chaos and a blessing of pain, all rolled into one, with a healthy side of paperwork for dessert.

All the students—well, former students now—are buzzing with excitement. After this, it’s no more difficult assignments, no more boring classes,
