#Thiruvonam Every month, on the day the star of Shravanam falls, fasting is done. It is called Shravana Vratham. Among the 27 stars only Thiruvonam belonging to Vishnu & Thiruvadhirai belonging to Lord Shiva have the special prefix 'Thiru' which marks the respect for those stars.
It is customary for Vaishnavites to undertake the Thiruvona (Shravana) fast every month. Thiruvonam in Avani (Aug-Sept) month is very special. Kerala Hindus celebrate Onam festival in this month. When Vamana took incarnation, Maha Vishnu incarnated on Thiruvonam. Just with a
request of 3 ft of land He vanquished Mahabali's arrogance. After Bali agreed to give, Vamana became gigantic. Then the Supreme Lord forgave Maha Bali and appointed him as the Emperor of the Underworld. Maha Bali Chakravarty comes to Earth once a year to see the people of Kerala,
i.e. his people. That is the festival of Onam which Kerala celebrates. Another important event on the same Thiruvonam is, MahaVishnu as Oppiliyappa comes to Sage Markandeya seeking His permission to marry His daughter who is none other than Boomi Pirati. Oppiliyappan married
Pirati on the day of Shravana of Aippasi (Oct_Nov) month. Hence in this temple too, this Thiruvona festival is celebrated every month. Vishnu Purana and Shiva Puranas say that those who fast on Thiruvona day will attain Vaikuntha status with all the blessings & be rid of rebirth.
Following this fast gives childless people the boon of a child. Those who observe this fast should refrain from taking food the previous night. Partaking food without salt (as Oppiliyapar accepts prasad without salt) is important for this Vrata. Bathing early in the morning,
visiting the temple & offering Tulsi garland to Perumal is the start of the Vratam. If one can do Salagrama Pooja at home it is good, then offer food to Sat Brahmanas. Pooja similar to Satyanarayana Pooja can be done if one can afford it. Offering all the good deeds we do that
day to Sriman Narayana, we will be blessed with fame, education, wealth and happiness. Taking only Thulsi water in the morning we should recite hymns like Vishnu Sahasranam, Vishnu Suktam, Narayana Suktam, reading Bhagavata Purana, reading Sri Ramayana. Sometimes Shravan may come
on full moon day and in those days Chandra darshan should be had & this will remove any ill effects of Moon if it is badly placed in our horoscope. Donations done on Vrat and the fruits of pooja should be offered to Sri Maha Vishnu. Shastras say that if we observe this Thiruvona
Vratam even once in our life time, the evils caused by the Moon will be removed and one will have a pleasant life. If we do the Thiruvona Vratam which will bring
huge changes in our lives and surely Mahalakshmi Kadakshmi, Subhiksham and immense happiness will fill our house.
