Are you or your colleagues just getting started with shifting your science instruction towards #NGSS? It can be difficult to know where to start! Here are my Top Ten STEM Teaching Tools that were transformative for my teaching and lesson design. Pls RT #ngsschat & #nstachat!

Building on prior interest and identity in instruction supports deeper engagement and learning.

Despite their centrality in science and engineering, phenomena have traditionally been a missing piece inscience education, which too often has focused on teaching general knowledge that students can have difficulty applying to real world contexts.

Engaging students in science classroom talk makes student thinking public and available for discussion, clarifies ideas, deepens reasoning, and helps students relate their thinking to others’ ideas.

Learning happens through talking. And yet, student talk typically makes up less than 20% of the time spent in science class, and of that small amount of time, very little is focused on student sensemaking.

Rather than simply viewing students’ intuitive or partially scientific ideas as misconceptions, the diversity of student’s ideas can be considered stepping stones to deeper understanding and teachers should actively engage with them.

The most exciting product of argumentation in STEM communities is the discovery & acknowledgement of areas of uncertainty, which lead to insights and new questions. Students should know that part of the work of scientists is questioning consensus.

It is much more productive to support learners as they organically develop language (terms, phrases) that interprets and explains phenomena, rather than asking them to merely acquire terms.

Rigid representations of a single "scientific method" don't accurately reflect the complex thinking or work of scientists. Engage students in multifaceted science and engineering practices in more complex, relevant, and authentic ways.

The new vision for #SciEd features a 3D view of learning that involves: science & engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, & disciplinary core ideas. Many times the CCCs are implicit, but making them explicit helps students use these thinking lenses.

Assessment items should highlight a range of practices. Traditional assessments have focused on the recall of information and sometimes also on explanation. Given the NGSS vision, students should be engaged in the full range of SEPs during assessment.

These are my Top Ten STTs that changed the way I thought about #SciEd! Thanks to @VOScience for inspiring this post. I am curious what other people think essential steps are when first diving into #ngss! Happy #nerdytshirtfriday -@SciJeanne
