Going to welcome a Golden Retriever into your life?
Here are 9 things you NEED to know.
🧵
1. Goldens have a “soft mouth”.
This means when they retrieve things they generally don’t destroy it.
HOWEVER as puppies they will CHEW everything.
Things you didn't think could be eaten, will be if you aren't careful.
2. Goldens have a HUGE amount of energy.
They are up for adventures multiple times a day.
They LOVE runs, walks, and hikes.
That energy means they have constant BEAKERING until they turn three or four.
(And maybe later!)
So, plan to be active!
3. Goldens were bred to swim and retrieve birds shot down over water.
They have webbed feet and will attempt to get in anything wet.
For safety, tie them to your water craft so they don’t go rogue.
We didn't and Beaker became a pirate that went INTO another canoe.
4. Goldens are CUDDLE monsters.
This means they will cuddle with anyone, and everyone.
Not everyone wants a wet dog trying to sit on their head.
If you don’t have a problem with this, you are golden.
5. They steal your heart.
Like most dogs, Goldens will steal a piece of your heart.
You have to be prepared for this.
You have to have some of your heart to give.
You have to be able to say goodbye to that part of your heart when it's time too.
You have to prepared for this.
6. Goldens are rarely serious.
They can be trained, of course, to be wonderful service dogs.
They can have serious expressions, like Beaker.
BUT they need time to be goofy.
If you want a serious dog, do not get a Golden.
7. Golden's shed.
You’d think that a BIG fuzzy dog like Bunsen would shed more than a smaller dog like Beaker.
False.
Goldens shed.
You may have to vacuum or sweep multiple times a week.
Or a day.
Get ready for SHEDMAGGEDON.
8. Goldens are hunters.
They are adorable and cute (they are) but many have a very strong prey drive.
You will have to work on this constantly.
Don’t be surprised if your golden gets a critter or two or pulls you across a field after one.
9. Goldens LOVE food and LOVE making their humans happy.
This means they are highly trainable.
BUT.
Be careful about feeding your golden too much.
It’s easy for them to get chubby, and that’s not great for their health or joints.
That's a wrap!
