Here we go!
—
Wei Wuxian always knew he liked girls. There was no questioning that.
But…
Wow.
Wowowowowowowowow.
Those were the only words his brain cells were able to form when he first laid eyes on Lan Wangji.
—
From the moment they met, Wei Wuxian made it his mission to annoy the Second Jade of Lan for the entire duration of the lectures at the Could Recesses.
And so, he started following the pristine Lan Wangji around, perstering him with with questions, teasing and pranking him constantly.
He didn’t really understand why at first. By all accounts, Lan Wangji was cold, distant, a boring fuddy-duddy. There was something making
Wei Wuxian gravitate towards him.
It was hard, getting real reactions out of the other boy. Hard but rewarding. Nothing made him happier than when Lan Wangji would shift his gaze to him, eyes ablaze with furry and call him shameless.
Nothing made Wei Wuxian happier than
Lan Wangji looking at him.
—
During one of him many punishments, copying rules in the library pavilion, Wei Wuxian’s attention keeps drifting further and further away from the task at hand.
He keeps glancing at his quiet companion, taking in the lines of his jaw,
the liquid honey of his eyes, the curve of his nose, the little frown, a tiny barely there scar on by his right eyebrow, the long, silky black hair…
Idly, he wonders how it would feel to run his fingers through those soft looking strands…
Shaking his head to clear his
thoughts, he glances down at his paper and notices he’s been absentmindedly doodling Lan Wangji all this time. Blushing furiously, he crumbles the piece of paper before shoving it in his sleeve. Hearing the commotion, Lan Wangji looks up at him, gorgeous golden eyes meeting his,
shimmering in the early afternoon sunlight.
Wei Wuxian’s breath hitches. And—
Oh.
OH.
That’s what it is. It’s glaringly obvious. No wonder Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang keep accusing him of being fixated on Lan Wangji.
“Wei Ying? Is anything the matter?”
Wei Wuxian chuckles nervously, unable to hold Lan Wangji’s gaze any longer.
“Ah Lan Zhan… I’m fine, I’m fine. Don’t worry, hm?”
Lan Wangji raises an elegant eyebrow before returning to his work.
“If Wei Ying says so… Please do not hesitate to tell me if something is wrong,
though.” he says softly.
“Awww Lan Zhan~! You really care about lil old me? Do you actually like me now?”
“… Mn.”
Wei Wuxian’s eyes widen in surprise at the easy admission. His cheeks are burning.
“O-oh. That… That’s good!”
He chances a quick glance towards Lan Wangji only
to see the other quickly avert his gaze. The younger Twin Jade’s ears are red.
Adorable.
Wei Wuxian fidgets in his seat for a few moments before making up his mind. Nodding to himself he slowly reaches across the table and tugs gently on Lan Wangji’s sleeve.
“Say Lan Zhan…
Can we… I don’t think I can focus on these rules anymore. Can we go to Caiyi instead? Can you show me around? Please?”
“Wei Ying has been to Caiyi many times before.”
“Yeah! But not with… Not with you. I’d like to go with you. Together. The two of us. Just us.”
As the silence stretches, Wei Wuxian starts panicking internally. That was too forward. There’s no way the pristine Second Jade of Lan would accept to go with him. He braces himself for the heart crushing rejection he’s sure to come his way.
But when he looks up shyly to Lan
Wangji, he sees how wide the other’s eyes are and how pink now dusts his cheeks.
Slowly, Lan Wangji nods.
Wei Wuxian almost kisses him right there and then.
—
They sneak away from the Cloud Recesses and make their way to Caiyi.
They spend a lovely afternoon just walking
around town. They share a basket of loquats by the piers. They peruse the various stalls of the street markets, often stopping to look more closely and what is offered and chat with the merchants (well Wei Wuxian is the one doing the chatting).
While Lan Wangji gets distracted
by a stall full of books and scrolls, Wei Wuxian takes the opportunity to backtrack to a previous stall. He carefully looks the items over before settling on a jade comb, decorated with a carving of a dragon seemingly protecting a small fox. He quickly sneaks a glance towards Lan
Wangji to make sure the other is still distracted and makes his purchase, wrapping it in red silk. He thanks the merchant, who wishes him good luck with his lady friend. Laughing, Wei Wuxian tucks the little package his sleeve before returning to his friend’s side.
“Lan Zhaaaan~
Are you done looking? I’m hungry! Can we go have dinner?”
“Mn. I know of an establishment I believe might suit you. They have a wide selection of Yunmeng dishes.”
Wei Wuxian squeals with delight. He latches onto Lan Wangji’s arm and lets himself be guided through the winding
street by his companion.
—
After a nice meal, they find themselves standing side by side on one of the numerous bridge littered across the town. It’s a comfortable silence. Wei Wuxian inches closer the Lan Wangji, brushing their arms together. The latter doesn’t move away.
Spurred on by the lack of rejection, Wei Wuxian leans his head on his companion’s shoulder.
Lan Wangji’s breath stutters and he glances down at Wei Wuxian. He remains silent.
“Say Lan Zhan… Thank you for today. I really had a great time with you.”
“There is no need to thank
me. I… I also had a great time with Wei Ying.”
“Really Lan Zhan? You really mean it?”
“Mn. Lying is forbidden. Always have a great time when Wei Ying is near.”
Wei Wuxian laughs, his hand seeking Lan Wangji’s, entwining their fingers.
“Now that can’t be true!” he says “I did
everything in my power to tease you just to get a reaction… Just to get you to look at me. And whenever you did, you always looked so angry with me!”
“You can be… A lot. More than I am used to. It was confusing and frustrating, at first, how you made me feel. But I was never
truly angry with you.”
Hearing these words, Wei Wuxian’s resolve is cemented. Pulling back from Lan Wangji, he reaches into his sleeve and pulls out the little red package. He fidgets with it nervously before shyly extending it towards Lan Wangji. The other takes it, ears pink.
He slowly peels back the soft silk wrapping and gasps at the comb hidden inside. He looks back up at Wei Wuxian, eyes unsure.
“I know I’m not an ideal match. I know I’m loud and break rules as easily as I breathe. But. But I feel… I know you’re my person. I like you so much!
You’re the one I want for the rest of my life. No one else will do. Only Lan Zhan. And if you’ll have me, I’ll formally request permission to properly court you from you uncle. I… don’t think he’ll approve but…”
Reverently, Lan Wangji wraps the comb back in the red silk and
tucks it away in his sleeves. He looks at Wei Wuxian then, golden amber eyes meeting starlit gray.
“If Uncle does not approve of you, we will elope.” he says, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
Eyes brimming with happy tears, Wei Wuxian throws himself into Lan
Wangji’s arms.
And it’s there, basking in the soft lights of the setting sun, that they share their first kiss.
//And that’s it!
