#kghn, confessions, fluff.
they're at tobio's house. it's unusually quiet.
usually, shoyo would be arguing with tobio about who's the dumbest (weird competition if you ask anyone who knows them, by the way), but today, practice was hard.
today, shoyo's tired. tobio is, too.
maybe that's what does it.
maybe it's the way their eyelids are closing, or how their bodies gravitate to each other to look for comfort, for familiarity.
maybe it's because of shoyo's unusual moment of vulnerability— of /silence/, that tobio lets himself speak.
"hey, are you falling asleep on my couch?"
shoyo doesn't answer, his respiration is slow and steady.
"are you that tired?"
again, tobio gets no response.
he sighs and stays still. he's sat messily on the big couch with his arms laying on the back of it. there's a lingering smell of this morning's rice, and the big clock in the living room is ticking loudly.
tobio takes this time to think.
he's extremely aware of shoyo's weight on his arm, of shoyo's warm breaths and the way they make him tickle.
tobio's too aware of how peaceful his friend looks like this; he could even count shoyo's freckles if he wanted to.
there's something majestic about hinata shoyo, even when he's asleep.
a magnetic pull, maybe, that brings tobio closer no matter how hard he tries to keep his distance.
perhaps this magnetic force is what brings out his truth.
"of course you fell asleep," tobio whispers. he has no intentions of waking his friend up. "you worked hard today."
the clock keeps ticking, shoyo's breath is still warm.
"you work hard every day," tobio continues.
"it's unbelievable how much effort you put in." he feels himself smile as he talks: he's fond of shoyo.
"sometimes it's infuriating," he admits, still unmoving. "it's annoying how early you get to school, how late you leave practice."
tobio sighs. "but that's also why i value you. that's why i set to you. i know you're the one meant to grow beside me, the one to... to make me better, to challenge me and defeat me," he can't help but smile softly. "like my grandfather said."
he looks at shoyo, his eyes are moving a little under his closed eyelids. maybe he's dreaming.
"that's why i..." tobio braces himself, thinking of what tsukishima told him: «let it out. even if it's just for yourself, let the words out for once.»
he needs to do this. so...
"that's why i'm in love with you."
the world's still the same after he admits it. if he thought things would change for the worse, he's proven wrong immediately. if anything, he feels slightly better.
even if shoyo can't hear him, even if they'll separate ways in a few months after graduating... it's still relieving to know his feelings are real, that they're not just inside of his head anymore.
"i know it doesn't make much sense," tobio explains, "maybe not to you, but... but you're so bright, dumbass. it's exciting being around you."
he's surprised he's been able to say this much, this articulately. he's not usually eloquent.
"and i mean it," he concludes. "when i say that as long as i'm here, you're invincible."
for a second, all tobio feels is overwhelming relief. he's in the middle of mentally congratulating himself for confessing when he also feels a pair of eyes staring at him.
he doesn't look at his friend. he doesn't want to confront that maybe (maybe!) shoyo heard him.
his resolve to look solely at the floor goes to shit when, as tobio feared, shoyo's eyes are open and shining brightly as he stares into tobio's blue eyes.
"you're in—" comes shoyo's voice.
"shut up," tobio interrupts, desperate to turn back time.
fortunately, his angst doesn't last for long, because suddenly shoyo's jumping from the couch and yelling.
tobio's embarrassed, what's this reaction supposed to mean?
shoyo giggles and grabs tobio by the arm. he pulls him close, making their eyes meet. it's endearing, as much as mortifying.
"tobio, you stupidhead! i like you so much!"
tobio takes a moment to react.
"WHAT?"
"i've been in love with you for /ever/," shoyo whines, his arms go straight around tobio's neck. "you're /so/ annoying, i could've actually been sleeping! i wouldn't have heard a thing!"
"i was counting on it!," is what tobio replies, red in the face. "you weren't supposed to hear!"
"well, i did! are you kissing me or what?"
and, uh...
listen, this didn't go as planned but if it's up to tobio to decide, he's definitely kissing his best friend.
