#Thirumayam_Satyamurth_Perumal #Anantha_Sayanam #DivyaDesam Thirumayam is a place of historical and religious importance in Pudukkottai district. There is the Thirumayam Fort & the famous rock-cut shrines of Siva & Vishnu, hewn out of the same rock. The temple is a protected

monument. The temple faces South with a 5 tier Rajagopuram and is on the east side of Shiva Temple. The Thirumeyyar deity is the longest Sayana God in India, measuring 22 ft, larger than Srirangam Perumal. It is also older than the Srirangam temple hence called #Adirangam. This

#Kudaivarai temple (cave) is built by the #Mutharaiyars. The temple is built on the slopes of a hill and one cannot circumambulate because the hill has been excavated to build the temple. #Thirumnagaiazhwar has done mangalasasanam for this temple. #Thirumeyyam (A Land of Truth)

has become Thirumayam. There are two main deities here. Sathyamurthy and Thirumeyyar. Thayar is Sri Ujjivana Nachiyar, (Uyyavantha Nachiyar). In this temple, under the Somacandra vimanam, in a standing posture is Lord Satyamurthy with a conch in one hand and a wheel in the other,

promised the devotees that He will come to their rescue always. Hence the name 'Sathyamurthy'. In the sanctum Perumal Sri Sathyamurthy is in standing posture with Sridevi Bhudevi and, on the right Pururava Chakravarthy, Sathya Maharishi. (Perumal appeared before Satya Maharishi

and hence that is also another reason for His name Sathyamurthy.) Urchavars Thirumeyyar, Sridevi, Bhudevi and Andal are in the front. Garudan sannidhi is in the centre of Sundarapandyan Mandapam. The sthala puranam is Lord Thirumeyyar was in His Yoga Nidhra on Adishesha, when

two demons Madhu and Kaidaba came there to kidnap Goddess Mahalakshmi and Bhoodevi. Fearing them, Mahalakshmi hid inside His chest and Bhoodevi at his feet. Not wanting to disturb Maha Vishnu’s sleep, Adisesha spit the poison and drove the demons. To prove this event, Adisesha

appears in a curled-up posture and quite ferocious. Thirumeyar is such a beautiful murthi! While His right hand is stretched backwards with hanging palm, His left hand is stretched on the side of the body. Brahma is on a lotus, from the naval of Perumal. Sridevi is His chest and

Bhudevi is near the feet. On the wall, keeping Brahma at center bas reliefs of Chandran with his wife, Markandeyar, Bonthu munis, Garudan, Asuras, Devas, Madhu, Kaidabar and Suryan. In addition to this there are bas-reliefs of Thumpuru with his disciples, Naradhar with his

disciples, Thanda Padchar, Kuralar, Vidyadharas, Saptha Rishis are also carved. The legend of Asuras who came to took captive of Sridevi and Bhudevi are running after frightened from jwalas which came from Adhiseshan is clearly shown in the form of bas-relief. The temple

consists of an ardha-mandapa in front of a rectangular sanctum. There is an octagon shaped tank her which is a work of art. This cave temple is age-old, most probably of 7th - 8th C. However the rest of the temple was constructed later on in bits. The Gopuram belongs to the

Pandya style. The Maha Mandapam has several huge, larger-than-life sculptures protruding from pillars of the Nayak Style (16th C). There were Manmatha, Rathi, Kuravan, Kurathi, Man on Horse etc. The best part is that each sculpture is a monolith, that is each is made of just 1

stone on the whole! Apart from these, there are separate shrines for Chakrathazhvar, Andal, Krishna, and Sr Lakshmi Narasimhar.
