#Thread Somalia Arms Embargo - in 2021 former State Defense Minister of Somalia Mohamed Ali Haga made an illegal arms purchase of $270M heading to Qooryooley; the crazy thing was Somalia's UN Mission in New York was aware of the arms shipment and failed to notify the UN- 1/5

Per intel sources the shipment was acquired by Alshabab leader Diireye to aid @M_Farmaajo gov who at the time was planning a coup as their term was ending on February 8th- this plan never materialized because of the UN security arm embargo mechanism that stopped the shippment 2/5

Abukar Osman Baale of @SomaliaatUN has engineered with help of former foreign minister and Farmaajo to expedite AMISOM's exit and lift the arms embargo so Farmaajo stays in power beyond his term. Somalia is a fragile country and does not need the arms embargo lifted 3/5

This is why the @UN security council extended Somalia's arms embargo mandate - if Somalia's arms embargo is lifted, it will legalize Iran's illegal arms smuggling via Puntland and another region. Also, this will invite an arms sale race between Iran, Turkey, Russia, and China.4/5

@HassanSMohamud gov can win the war against al-Shabab without the UN lifting the arms embargo and should have the right military strategy and carry out critical security reforms that are overdue; and the longer this war drags, Alshabab is winning.
