Oh. My. Stars! The Kaoru Mori / Bride’s Story #manga exhibit will be on display at the @kyotomm manga museum during my brief visit to Kyoto today!!! Eeeeeeee! kyotomm.jp/en/ee/otoyomeg… hear why this @yenpress title is a @mangasplaining must-read: mangasplaining.com/blog/ep-20-a-b…

Holy cow, that Kaoru Mori / Bride’s Story at @kyotomm is everything i could have wanted and more. Gorgeous original art and bilingual Japanese *and* ENGLISH descriptions & artist commentary. kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

Here’s a detail from A Bride’s Story cover art for vol 11 - i didnt notice the care and detail in the background paintings until i saw them like this: kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

The Kaoru Mori / Bride’s Story exhibit at @kyotomm starts with a gallery of #manga cover art paintings with her commentary - “i wanted to create something with a sense of movement that would be eye-catching at a glance”

In this cover illustration painting for A Bride’s Story vol 3, Kaoru Mori describes how she tried to layer gouache to create a textured embroidery effect on the costume. As seen at @kyotomm kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

In the Kaoru Mori exhibit at @kyotomm, there’s sections devoted to each of the “brides” - Amir, Pariya, Laila and Leili, and Anis kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata… - amazing to see so many hand-drawn #maga pages up close

Also very cool to see Kaoru Mori’s rough storyboard / page sketches —> inked pages snd final typeset story pages, at @kyotomm A Bride’s Story #manga exhibit today

This sketch to finished page comparison from A Bride’s Story was pretty striking too. As seen at @kyotomm today - kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

There was also a display of costumes from Uzbekistan, Kazhakstan and Turkmenistan that inspired the world depicted in A Bride’s Story by Kaoru Mori. As seen at @kyotomm today - kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

Love this advice from Kaoru Mori to “your younger self when you first started drawing #manga,” from the Bride’s Story exhibit at @kyotomm - kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

Love seeing these Bride’s Story #manga scenes with Pariya playing with her kitten. As seen at @kyotomm today. kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

If you go to the Bride’s Story exhibit at @kyotomm and buy your ticket online, you’ll get a Bride’s Story zipper pouch, 2 character buttons & 1 of 5 different reproductions of #manga pencil sketch pages. kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

No photos allowed in the gift shop, but i did buy a bunch of Bride’s Story stuff — including 3 reproduction #manga pages and a plate kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

Also from the Kyoto Manga Museum gift shop, I bought these 2 amazing (and kinda heavy) china platters featuring art from classic shojo #manga series, Glass Mask. I woulda got more “mangazara” - but they’re heavy & fragile-ish… :-/

No exaggeration - @yenpress’ hardcover editions of A Bride’s Story (R, in 1st photo) are pretty much the nicest version in print. As seen at @kyotomm today kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…

Was thinking of doing a lil’ @mangasplaining giveaway of some of the #manga goodies I’ve found on this trip. Maybe a random drawing from Mangasplaining Extra @SubstackInc subscribers? mangasplainingextra.com

One last batch of pics from the Kaoru Mori / Bride’s Story exhibit at Kyoto #Manga Museum @kyotomm - her drawing tools, some pencil sketches she did at her live demo & this page of a bazaar scene - see this if you can! It’s up thru Dec 26, 2022 kyotomm.jp/ee/otoyomegata…
