Rapid FactCheck: The city's Daily Shelter & Occupancy Service Usage is "a daily snapshot of the occupancy and capacity of the system".
Specifically, on Dec 6 2021, Sinead Canavan, Project Director, Issues Mgmt for SSHA, speaking on behalf of General Manager Gord Tanner, said:
1/
"The actual capacity figures reported in the Daily Shelter & Overnight Service Usage report reflect the number of rooms or beds/spaces online in SMIS at 4:00 a.m. Rooms under renovation would not be included in this data, as they would be taken offline in SMIS."
2/
I have treated the numbers as only "online" beds were counted based on this written statement from a Shelter, Support and Housing Administration Director speaking on behalf of the organization.
Lie.

In today's @TorontoStar, @_VictoriaGibson reports the City told her daily bed counts are “not a good reflection” of reality: it can include offline rooms - including decommissioned shelter hotels, rooms being cleaned, repaired, etc.

4/
@_VictoriaGibson specifically asked about the Bond Hotel - where @BondResidentsTO have been especially vocal. The City told me in writing that those beds were not included in the official numbers a year ago but now it comes out those exact beds could've been counted all along

@c_shadowspaces says: misleading numbers “sends the message that they have things under control, that if people did just really want services they could just call again and again … things are OK and it’s not a crisis, when it’s been a crisis for a long time.”
6/
This is why we fought for and the turn-away data to be recorded and made public in the first place.
🧵about the latest data:

But we don't just need data, we need action. @shelleycarroll's now the Chair of the ECDC - in charge of shelters. It meets in Jan. Approx 1/2 the non-family shelter system is closing by the end of April. Will they over evict 2500 people to nowhere?
