๐Ÿ“ˆ Back fours
๐Ÿ“‰ Three-at-the-backs

A notable trend from the first part of the 2022/23 #PL is the move away from a back three system for many sides

๐Ÿงต Thread ๐Ÿงต

Only Antonio Conte's Spurs and Graham Potter's Chelsea use a back 3๏ธโƒฃ as their preferred system

Brentford, Brighton and Wolves did too last season, but have adopted a back four as their first-choice this campaign

In 2021/22, a back three was used by #PL sides in 28.6% of all matches โฌ†๏ธ

This season, that figure has dropped to 22.2% โฌ‡๏ธ

This season has seen some of the more successful sides stick with their preferred formation throughout the first part of the campaign:

โœ… 4-3-3: Newcastle & Arsenal (15 & 14 times)
โœ… 4-2-3-1: Fulham & Leeds (15 & 14 times)

15/20 sides have adopted a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 as the preferred formation ๐Ÿ‘€

Both have increased in popularity, by 7.1% and 8% respectively ๐Ÿ†™

This is linked to the decrease in back three systems; some managers prefer to use a back four against an opponent's front three
