As one of the most popular proteins or meats consumed world wide , Goat Meat is slowly becoming a preference in SA too.

But Ever Wondered why we don’t find Goat meat in SA retail stores or Butcheries as other meats? HERE’S WHY [THREAD]😫😎

EASY TO FARM: Goats are widely considered as hardy and easy to farm livestock. but as we all know regular consumption is the key driver of demand for Food. Being closely linked to African cultural activities - mainstream commercial farmers haven’t been focused on farming goat 🐐 twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

SCEPTICISM:Goat meat is consumed all over Africa & the world while in SA there has been huge uncertainty on the size of the market. Yet KZN for eg. Is one of the biggest importers of goats- in 2013 it was report about 385000 goats were imported in the Year, whilst breeding is low

THE RISE: Even with the low counts of breeders - Goat meat is still considered a delicacy around the world - being consumed even in Palaces. its health benefits that makes it popular. Higher in Iron & potassium than Beef & leaner than Chicken & turkey. Considered for its taste 👅

The Goat market continues to offer opportunities for farmers mainly as there are many gaps. biggest is the wide range of breeds that can cater to different industries uniquely. Over 300 breeds all over the world - in SA there are a Few most common for Meat Milk & cashmere/mohair

PRODUCTS: With the wide range of breeds - the best way to group goats is how each breed caters to each market. Boer Goats/KalahariReds/Savannah are meat based - Alpines/Saanens/Toggenburg - Milk breeds. Angora Goats Mohair/Cashmere - Indigenous Veld goats - Skins/Leather/Meat.

But even with a wide variety of Breed type goats- the numbers for farmers to be part of supply chains is still low - making it hard to retail as Goats are also seasonal breeding animals. Most who have tried to supply goat meat often cut off due to questions of quantity vs quality

Demand is also a factor & uneducated Market. Goat meat when mature is referred to as Chevon when younger Cabrito (Spanish) Capretto (Italian). It is lower in Calories & cholesterol than both Beef & Chicken, & holds the potential of having a greater taste and lesser fat than Lamb

AVAILABILITY: Goat meat is still fairly scarce mainly due to the farmers making it available for continuous retail. But with demand still higher than supply, presents a great opportunity for supply as a great alternative to lamb and mutton. But price wise really depends on supply twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

CHOOSE THE RIGHT BREED: What I Teach Farmers: if you want to go Commercial for goat farming & you’re considering to getting into Goat farming - Learn about the breed you want to specialise in, locations favourable and the markets for each product so to increase demand & supply

QUALITY VS QUANTITY: Based on what I have heard from consumers: Smell, hairy meat, tough meat are all based on past experiences and linked ways to grow stock for slaughter. Next time I’ll teach how to feed your goats for Market meat consumption. KEEP FARMING 🐐 #farming #Thread
