🧵This is Russia's 'silent' mortar.

Well, it's not really silent, it's rated at around 135dbs. A Russian operator in the field describes it as "not louder than a clap of hands”.

I've looked at them here: armourersbench.com/tag/2b25-morta…

It uses the spigot mortar principle (a bit like the PIAT, but the spigot is fixed so its more like the Blacker Bombard) coupled with the captive piston principle where the gases are retained in the bomb tail. 2/

Developed by the central research institute Burevestnik, it is manned by a two man team and can be transported in a backpack. 3/

Here's my earlier article and video on the 2B25:

Recently it was seen in use in Ukraine for the first time. Here is being used without its base plate, using an ammunition crate to spread its ground pressure. 5/

A number of videos and images have been shared via telegram by a user that describes himself as “regular soldier of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, for more than 10 years.” 6/

The user's videos show the mortar being paired with a commercial drone to dial in fall of shot. The 82mm 2B25 has a range of 1.2km so its use is fairly niche, reportedly designed for special forces use. 7/

For more information and to see it in action check out my article and video on the Russian unit's use of the so-called 'silent' mortar here 👇
