Why would some of Trump’s staunchest supporters and allies in the House seemingly and publicly defy him when it comes to McCarthy’s bid for SoH?
I don’t know what it is, exactly, but something is definitely afoot.
I believe Trump knows that KM is not ideal but there is no viable alternative right now and you have to work with what you’ve got.
Trump knows KM would do almost anything to be SoH, so he’s using his House allies to squeeze KM for the best deal that MAGA could get out of him.
For example, it was announced yesterday that the Congressional Leadership Fund, which is endorsed by KM, has agreed to refrain from spending in open-seat primaries in safe GOP districts, which opens the door for MAGA candidates to run and win.

My GOPe contacts in DC were seemingly caught off guard by the relatively small but committed House resistance to McCarthy’s bid for SoH.
As far as I can tell, they were not expecting it and thus were not prepared for it, hence the chaos on display.
