10 Visual Masterpiece Movies

A list of ten aesthetically-driven movies that create an immersive experience in different eras

Watch in order to truly understand the world we live in today.

Silence.

Two 17th century Portuguese priests travel to Japan to find their mentor after brutal crackdown on Christianity in the country. Story of faith and apostasy. Scorsese’s most underrated movie

The Revenant.

Hugh Glass seeks REVENGE in the brutal wilderness of 1820s Montana. The best movie for visually capturing the beauty and Danger of untamed land.

Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood.

Hollywood California in 1970. The end of Hollywood’s golden era. Tarantino adds a million vintage accents to movie (radio/tv ads, movie trailers, locales, googie signage, music, clothing) to make it totally immersive. It is a perfect film.

The Thin Red Line.

World War II in the Pacific Theater (Guadalcanal). The soldiers in the movie undergo incredible physical and emotional turmoil. Visually, it is the most compelling and interesting war movie ever made. Almost feels too intense/real at some points.

Barry Lyndon.

One of Kubrick’s best movies. It follows an Irishman through lifetime of exploits taking him all over 18th century Europe. It was groundbreaking in it’s use of natural light (especially the way it captured candlelight) and presents the period better than any film

Apocolypto.

Late Maya civilization just before the arrival of the Spanish in Mexico. Extremely ambitious and incredible detailed movie. Minor details in the scenes of the city and its aristocracy are IMPORTANT. Possibly the best movie ever made!

The Last Duel.

Newest movie on the list. It is a story of betrayal and vengeance in medieval Europe. It was panned by a lot of critics but was very good. Excellent fighting scenes and beautifully costumed/shot

North by Northwest.

Alfred Hitchcock always made 50s and 60s America look so swanky and cool, and this film does it best. The film takes you on a dangerous chase all over the country and is full of Hitchcock’s signature twists.

The Assassination of Jesse James.

One of my personal favorites. The film follows the James Gang through the countryside of Missouri in the days following the Civil War. It is an atypical western but might be the best in the genre.

Russian Ark.

Still the best movie that was made as one, continuous shot. It is a dreamlike wander through the Winter Palace of St. Petersburg in the late days of its aristocracy. Resplendent military uniforms and gowns. Absolutely beautiful.
