In January 2013, Ukraine signed a production-sharing agreement with Royal Dutch Shell for shale gas exploration and development in the Yuzivska field in eastern Ukraine.

Now memorize this map of the russian invasion of Ukraine:

The Yuzivska field was estimated to hold up to 4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, which would have made Ukraine one of the largest shale gas producers in Europe.

The initial investment for the project was at least $10 billion, with Shell granted the right to explore and develop the field for a period of 50 years.

As a bonus - Ukraine already has many gas storages and transport pipes right to the EU.

If the agreement had been implemented, it could have had significant benefits for Ukraine. The Yuzivska field was estimated to hold up to 4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, which could have generated up to $8 trillion in revenue over the course of the 50-year agreement.

5/7
Ukraine would have become less reliant on Russian gas imports and could have potentially exported gas to other European countries, further boosting its economy.

But It could be an exceptionally sad outcome for russian Gazprom: it could completely lose the market.

6/7
The project was suspended in 2014 following the outbreak of conflict in eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea by Russia. In 2015, Shell announced that it was withdrawing from the project due to economic and geopolitical considerations.

Meanwhile, Donetsk doesn't have drinking water. So why did russia do nothing to fix it, following its own narrative in the last 8 years?

From the russian perspective - no need. As they "already filmed all necessary footage for fake news".
