#DYK that on this day in 1854, #Sacramento became the California State Capitol? #SD8

Other cities in #California that have served as capitals are:

Monterey (1774-1849)
San Jose (1849-1851)
Vallejo (1852-1853)
Benicia (1853-1854)
San Francisco (1862)

Of course, here in #SD8, Sacramento is our favorite!

The Assembly Chambers are decorated in green to remind people of the fields (the Assembly had the role of House of Commons.)

The Senate is decorated in red, since that’s the color used by the House of Lords in England (the upper house.)

The desks used by each Senator on the Senate Floor, are the same used when the Capitol opened—in 1870!

In the #caleg, the #Senate votes by voice rollcall (with each Senator responding to their name), where the Assembly votes by pressing a red or green button.

From time to time, the Capitol Building will be illuminated in different colors— like it is here, when California celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote.

The Capitol is constructed in a “neo-classical” design. It divides and unifies the Senate and Assembly.

It rises nearly 100 feet from a circular walk on the second floor.

The celebration of the California State Capitol Tree Lighting Ceremony fared back to the early 1930s!

Construction of the Capitol took 14 years! The cornerstone of the Capitol was laid at the northeast corner in May 15, 1861.

Severe flooding led to the creation of “Capitol Hill” that the capitol sits on today—that cornerstone is now approximately 6 feet underground!
