Origin
a) 1919 act: President and deputy president
b) 1935 act: Name changed to speaker and deputy speaker

Election
Art 93: The house shall, as soon as may be choose the two members one after other.
Hence, election is mandatory but no time limit prescribed.

-President fixes date of election of speaker
-Speaker fixes date of election of Dy speaker
-Speaker elected by simple majority
-Any member can propose the name of any other through a motion for Dy speaker

Removal (applicable for both)
1) If Ceases to be a member
2) Resigns by writing to Dy speaker and vice versa
3) By resolution
-if removal motion passed by 50+ members then it is considered
-motion must be passed by special majority
-14 days advance notice given

Powers (only special ones)
a) Speaker presides over sitting, Dy speaker in his absence, any of 10 chairperson in Dy speakers absence, in everyone's absence any person decided by house
b) Casting vote in case of ties
c) Decides bill as money bill

d) His work can be discussed and criticized only by substantive motion
e) Speaker presides over sitting, Dy speaker in his absence, Dy chairman of RS in his absence

Vacant position (Not absent)
If both speaker and Dy speaker's office is vacant then president appoints speaker.

Speaker Pro Tem
-Appointed after general election for brief period
-Appointed by president among lok sabha members
-Oath administered to him by president
-Main job is to administer oath to new members
-Enables house to elect new speaker
