Detailed #Thread || Soldiers from PLA Ground force deployed in Tibet against India have quite a intresting loadout. [ 1/40 ]

For the longest time, basic military equipment like armour and helmets were considered “弱者的装备” "equipment for the weak" in PLA

This was the excuse they used to give for defending their under equipped soldiers but things have changed now !

In recent years, the PLAGF have modernized themselves at a expeditious pace.

This #Thread will explore the loadout of a PLA soldier At Squad Level based on pic and propaganda video available online

Let's start from the top

1) Helmet and accessories.

QGF-03 is the most common helmet in service, is a ACH by design. No official NIJ rating is given by PLA

The PLA have provided accessories Mounting system for soldiers deployed in Tibet to mount NVDs, lights, camera etc. On the helmet itself

Accessories : Night vision devices

Each PLAGF soldier is issued with
Digital night vision mono. (Atleast in propaganda video) making it the only major force which issue digital
NVDs in massas

Skip to Tweet no. 17/32 if you don't want to here anything about digital night vision devices

Spoiler alert :

You 'll be missing many Cool stuff

A digital night vision works exactly like your commercial digital camera

» The biggest advantage of using digital NVD over traditional analog NVG is the cost.

At the cost of one PVS 14 mono you can buy 5 digital night vision mono

» This allows the PLA to equip soldiers with them in massas

But Digital NVDs are not all sunshine. It have its own flaws

1. Power hungry

It consumer a lot of energy to operate hence you can't use them for long.

2. Can't perform in true dark low light conditions.

Sensor of digital night vision is not sensitive enough to work in true dark conditions, but it's still better than the naked eye.

Traditional analog NVDs absolutely destroy digital is such conditions

To address this issue the PLAGF provide IR light as artificial light source. IR light are invisible to humans but can easily be see with NVDs Comparison :

with without IR light

IR light is a double edged sword against a near peer adversary. If your opponent have even a basic night fighting capabilities he can spot you easily as IR light literally glow like a bright touch in dark when seen night under night vision device

Traditional I2 used by Indian army are made up of exotic material hence can't be mass produced on the other hand digital can be mass produced at a low cost.

In good lighting conditions, the digital have excellent visible.

The digital will surpass traditional in the future

Another major advantage of digital is weight and flexibility :

Traditional night vision device is made up of long image intensifier tube (photocathode tubes) which are bulky and uncomfortable to wear for long period of time.

These constraint doesn't apply on digital technologies, take your high end smart phone as an example

Your i phone have a small camera in the back but it still able to capture good low light pics bec. software can compansate for lack of hardware.

Back to PLAGF helmet, The cable seems to connect the device with battery pack / processor which is place behind the vest.

This is another advantage of digital tech. That you can move around different sensor to different parts of the body and connect them together

By moving the weight around, you can effectively balance out the wt. A Lot better, on the other hand traditional night vision need to have all components in one frame

This being said. The traditional image intensifiers will outperform digital in every case

2) Communication Equipment.

PLA use TBR series of radios.

At squad level they use TBR-002
VHF FM Transceiver It was
Introduced in 2008

There is a speaker and PTT (push to talk) control. With PTT the radio could be operated with a headset / ear piece.

The PLA is drifting towards Software define radio for future

The PLAGF is also issuing Tablets or
"Tactical information systems" to squad leader.

These computers is used to share and receive battlefield W/ command center or amount each of the soldiers.

Apparently the squad leader can track each soldier's movement in real time on a digitised map and can Also stream footage from soldiers body cams hence Inc. the situation awareness

This is probably a customized Huawei tablet which the soldier Carries on their chest and can be folded when not in use

2) body armour and vest

Perhaps the most practical and major upgrade is the introduction of body armour. Infantry soldiers deployed against India maybe the first one who are issued W/ hard body armour in PLAGF twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Unlike the civilian chinese plates, the standard issues armour is actually designed to perform it's intended role. Presumably NIJ III rated

Vest :-

Drifting from older load-bearing vest to plate carrier. The new Issued vest in Type-21 camouflage Have mag Pouches, molle for attachments, Velcro and a Quick release system (VQR) Which enable soldiers to remove the vest within seconds with one hand pull

Type 21 uniform : consist up of boots, new camouflage, back pack, jackets, helmet cover and more

Apart from the camouflage update, the new combat uniform features 3 major updats :

1) Replacing all the buttons in the uniform with a combination of Velcro and zippers

2) replacing the vertical pockets with horizontal one for quick take out

3 ) military boots : comfortable, breathable, light and durabl. The upper is composed of chrome tanned Ox brown top layer suede and composite canvas

According to MoD, china
"The new uniform are being distributed to all member of PLA since winter of 2021"

Now, perhaps the most important Equipment.

In 2019, finally drifting away from their forsaken Bullpup the PLA unrevealed it's next generation of small arms.

The QBZ/U family of fire arms, a AK-AR Hybrid with more similarly with AR 15. It have a

» Carbine (QBZ-192)
» Assault rifle (QBZ-191)
» designated marksman rifle (QBU)

** Here we'll talk about the assault rifle only

External features includes

» A AK style Mag release

» A reciprocating charging handle (right side)

» Full length mil std 1913 P rail &
Mounting ops at 3,9 & 6'o clock

» 4 position telescopic non foldable butt stock

» AR style ambi fire sector :
safe → full auto → semi auto

I know close to nothing about rifle's internals so keeping that for experts

Accessories of the rifle includes :

A vertical fore grip with integrated bipod and light

Aiming Laser and illuminator

30 round magazine

Suppressors

Grande launcher

Optics : Two type of optics are in service

QMK-171A :- A 3X fixed power, passively illuminated scope. Uses Fiber optic and tritium (for night time illustration)

IR5118 Thermal sight :- it's a Electronic scope with 9 hrs battery life and have thermal capabilitie

Ammunition :-

When the major militaries like india & American are moving from smaller
Calibre to larger one like 7.62x51/39
And 6.8 respectively. The PLA is Maintaining it's 5.8x42mm cartilage since 1980s

The QBZ-191 uses a improved version of DPB 10 (72 grains) 5.8 cartilage which is called DBP 191

You can read about 5.8 in far more details here

thanks for sticking around, it become too long for my liking but don't want to leave any major details behind.

People interested can further read this interesting thread.

I'm pretty sure that it's the most detailed thread on PLAGF deployed against India on internet.

Note : ground loadout may be different as this thread is purely based on propaganda video
