They call attention to the #water crisis but also say: a sustainable water future is possible.
How?
A quick 🧵
1️⃣ The world must recognize and manage the water cycle as a global common good, restoring and safeguarding it for all. Countries are interconnected — through rivers & streams of groundwater, but also due to atmospheric flows of water vapour originating on land.
2️⃣ Water relates to human well-being in a myriad of ways. A new economics that safeguards the water cycle should be outcomes-focused & mission-driven & able to mobilize all of society – public, private, civil society and local communities.
3️⃣ Stop undervaluing and underpricing water. Combined with targeted support for the poor and vulnerable, making sure water is properly priced will enable it to be used more efficiently, more equitably and more sustainably.
4️⃣ Phase out some US $700 billion of subsidies in agriculture and water which fuel excessive water consumption and other environmentally damaging practices. Direct freed up resources to incentivise water conservation and universal access.
5️⃣ Create Just Water Partnerships (JWPs) to mobilize investments in water access, resilience, and sustainability in low- and middle-income countries, in ways that contribute to both national development goals and the global common good.
6️⃣ The coming decade is critical for rapid action to fortify freshwater storage, develop the urban circular water economy, cut down water footprints in manufacturing, make agriculture less water-intensive.
7️⃣ The multilateral governance of water must be reshaped & support capacity building, prioritize gender equality in water decision-making, empower farmers, women, youth, Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
Water is an opportunity for economy-wide innovation & a new social contract, with justice & equity at the centre.
This is the only way to deliver on the right to safe water & keep the Earth System safe for humanity.
