"Tight grain supplies reflect the impact of climate change on crop production as well as growing global demand for livestock that feed on corn, eating away at stockpiles"

& guess what?

The #ClimateCrisis is ramping up as our leaders pour fuel on the fire…
☝️All these warning signs at the same as we know models are likely highly conservative in predicting how #ClimateChange will impact global food production-

Our leaders are clueless or incompetent-

The Solar Water Box provides robust, on-wheels, solar-powered water filtration unit that can deliver up to 10,000 litres of filtered water per day says @hamzafarrukh…
Another startup, called #PakVitae, is providing a filter product that does not require electricity. Using gravity and attaching to the bottom of #water containers, the filters can provide up to 10,000 litres.

It’s pitch-dark at night for tens of thousands of people living on small sections of dry land in most parts of Sindh. #SunKing's Raza Zubair heard about the plight of the flood victims and now providing #solar-powered lamps for #PakistanFloods' survivors…

The Pakistan floods are not an isolated incident for the back page of your newspaper. The scale, and relevance for all of us, should make this the main headline wherever you live.

(3/) This summer was marked by extreme weather events all over the northern hemisphere. As a reader of this newsletter, you have likely experienced this too. For instance, many European readers will remember the record-breaking drought in Western Europe.

Locals in Hamedan rallied for several days, protesting the water shortage. While the regime blames invisible elements for this crisis, all the strings lead to #Iran ruling theocracy's destructive policies. Let's dig in.
Hamedan province has dozens of ancient Iranian cities. Hamedan was once considered one of Iran's water-rich provinces, with numerous aquifers and the famous Ekbatan Dam that supplied many towns. #Iran Image
Two major factors have resulted in the current situation in Hamadan. The first one is the regime's collective actions that have led to the drying up of the Ekbatan dam and maintaining the Mufateh thermal power plant.…

(1/16) For over 1000 years, people from all over Europe have walked through Spain to Santiago de Compostela. This summer, I followed in the footsteps of millions but with an extra challenge:

Spain has been facing the driest conditions for at least 1200 years.

(3/16) I needed a break from my usual focus on the climate and water crises, so I took five weeks to hike more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the French Pyrenees to the northwest of Spain.

I wanted to focus on my health, the beauty of nature, and people I would meet.

TW: Police violence
2/12 #failuretorenderassistance
Police endangered human life! During the clearing of a sit-in in the #Hamburg harbor, the police left an unconscious person lying in the sun for at least 20 minutes. The police massively obstructed the paramedics.
Without consideration for the injured person and endangering the paramedics, the police continued the violent eviction. Despite requests to call an ambulance, this happened only after a considerable delay - the acute danger to life was simply ignored.

Current #adaptation projects do not automatically enhance #gender equality | need to be intentionally brought in at planning & implementation stages.

Embedding gender considerations and facilitating #women’s participation in project design and implementation along with #inclusive #policies, training, information access, planning, and monitoring is needed
Additional course correction for #SDG5 is needed.
Our #SDG5plus (SDG5+) approach takes into consideration #intersectionality and gender aspects beyond #women alone, & can help #adaptation actions move towards meeting #genderequality and other #climatejustice goals.

As a responsible user of #water, HCCB’s approach to #waterstewardship incorporates a multitude of initiatives such as the construction of check dams, desilting, and restoration of ponds and natural water bodies, rainwater harvesting,
and building bunds and conservation tanks and so much more. These initiatives help us maintain water positivity which means that we return more water to the aquifer than we use in our operations. An example of this can be seen in #Gujarat,
where our water recharge shafts enabled us to replenish 100% of the water that we consumed in 2021. Going a step further, #HCCB replenished 12.98 L kiloliters of water in #Rajasthan, despite having no operations in the state.

Question for twitter: Why hasn't there been a single new reservoir built for over 30 years in the UK?
We used to build loads:

#water #watershortage #drought #privatisation Image
Disclaimers: I made this graph by going through the 500-odd wikipedia entries for UK reservoirs and noting their completion dates (stuck alone at home with covid). Didn't include hydro-electric projects or canal feeders as far as possible. It's not comprehensive, but not bad
What I think this shows is that a +30 year gap in building new reservoirs is not normal. There hasn't been even a 5 year gap in the previous 150 years.

A 🧵 on Strategic Thinking

Would targeting water pumps in occupied Crimea by Ukraine, forcing Russia to provide #water from uncontested sources, i.e., mainland Asia in Krasnodar Oblast and moving over the Kerch Bridge with truck or train, be a violation of international law? Image
Absolutely not!

Why would it be?

Targeted destruction of the water pumps does NOT deny ALL water to Crimea, it only denies Putin & The Kremlin access to the most efficient means of conveying water from Ukraine, water that Russia is currently stealing. Image
There are other sources of water to supply Crimea, on territory within Russia which are not contested under any international disputes or conflicts over rightful, legitimate sovereign territorial claims.

There have been no Ukrainian claims of ownership of Krasnodar Oblast. Image

Con-call with 3 collegues. All #Banking #Security pros. They noted, via twitter, I had attended the @SCSpikes #NFTClassic. Asked me if I was into #NFTs, he is. No. I'm not. I'm like #baseball. Why? Three Reasons. I was asked by them to post my response.
1 - #Crypto/#Blockchain, like all complex mathematics fascinates me. I love it from a technical perspective, AND have worked on two functional commercial applications. But as an operational Day2Day transactional currency? It is loony-tunes impossible to make it pencil.
I was hired by a major credit card company to write a think piece on a 100% of the annual transaction and settlements. One major credit card company on blockchain by year 5 would consume 12% of the world's electrical generation. That nuts.

"The deaths in Raichur — where the water purification plant was not cleaned for years — are a grim reminder that the government should clean up water supply systems under its 314 urban local bodies."

#Raichur is fabled for an extraordinary system of #water #harvesting pioneered by Leonard Munn, a Britisher who built over 1500 wells to provide the people of the region good, clean drinking water.

#Mythread on #Ukraine & #Africa from a #GlobalGateway perspective! Good news from @EU_Commission, #Ukraine’s recovery will cost $750 billion. Probably a lot will come from from seized #Russian assets! @vonderleyen said #EU already raised €6.2 billion for #Ukraine #MyPhoto 1/1
More to be done via a new special platform to be co-chaired by #Kyiv and #EuropeanCommission! Good initiative, but it will probably not automatically scale up private finance & create conditions for companies to think long-term! 1/2
Many questions still need to be answered: How will #EU support #Ukraine's neighboring countries affected? What are the #privatesector priority sectors: #digital solutions, #green transition, #water and #sanitation, and in which countries? 1/3
