Chronicles of Sanjay Gandhi ::

He was born to Firoz and Indira on 14th Dec 1946, and he died in a plane crash on 23rd June 1980.

His death for sure altered the course of Indian politics and the Congress party by forcing his elder brother, future Prime Minister

Cont...

Rajiv Gandhi, to step into the vacuum. Forcing, because Rajeev was not so keen on politics.

While Sanjay lived a mediocre and loner life in school. He had quite an interest in cars. He had an unfinished internship at Royal Royce United Kingdom

At the age of 25, Sanjay

was made Managing Director at Maruti Motors by Indira Gandhi to deliver "people's car"

Without even having prior experience in manufacturing or management, he was sat on the powerful chair by his mother so she could set an example to inspire the youth of India to dream.

Ironically Maruti didn't manufacture any cars during his regime as MD.

But this paved his ways for Indian political system.

The Crown Prince was anointed successor to Indira's throne!

During emergency, he was Indira's adviser and although not elected as

Member of parliament but he had FULL powers.

High-profile govt officials resigned in protest over Sanjay’s interference in govt I.K. Gujral, for example, resigned as Cabinet Minister of Information and Broadcasting after Sanjay reportedly tried to control the government.

Cont.

“I’m your mother’s minister, not yours,” said Gujral. Ultimately, Gujral was replaced with Vidya Charan Shukla, who has been called a propagandist for Gandhi’s government during the Emergency.

Sanjay’s involvement in the forced sterilization campaign during the Emergency

has also come under the scanner. Forced sterilization was part of a push towards family planning that caused widespread chaos and led to infections and health crises.

Historians have flagged his encouragement of the campaign, the free license given to those who were in

his favor, and the tacit support he received from his mother, apparently.

His death is an unanswered “what if?” moment in Indian history and politics.

His death was followed by wild speculations and conspiracy theories, the most popular of which is that Indira Gandhi

Cont...

had something to do with her son’s death, in order to prevent him from overshadowing her politically!

Right after Sanjay’s death, his wife Menka Gandhi was thrown out from his house.

Maneka Gandhi said that the PM called her to her outer office and in the presence

of several persons asked her to leave. She said she begged for two days to quit as she had no house to go to and her son Varun was running a fever. But Indira Gandhi was adamant, she said!
