An interesting choice of words - one of the Russian drone-building volunteer efforts said on its Telegram that "the pace of orders has more or less returned to normal, we are trying to reduce the time from drone requests to shipment." t.me/c/1718212276/2…


This either implies that this effort is now effective to build enough FPV drones on demand, indicating increased capacity - or there are fewer requests coming in at this time, which is less likely considering massive demand for this UAV type.

More from Russia's KatyaValya volunteer effort - this one involves setting up an assembly plant for FPV drone mass production. Again, this is one of many uncoordinated efforts across the country, working in parallel (but not in direct cooperation) with the domestic defense industry.

According to Russian state media, Project Archangel volunteer effort has developed an aircraft-type loitering drone with a distance of up to 25km. Developers claim it’s much cheaper than a Mavic or a Lancet UAV. This effort also includes developing large ISR drones.

And in line with previous reports and analyses, the Russian military is using DJI quadcopters most likely donated by volunteers to conduct ISR missions.

"...they plan to build 20,000 FPV copters and 200 repeater drones per month. The problem for us (Russians) is not that such a quantity inevitably turns into quality. The problem is that strategic thinking and a cold calculation for a long confrontation are seen behind such work."

"...work. No one in Ukraine thinks "what will I do with this equipment after the war", because "after the war" may not come. An important point: it is impossible to mass-produce very unique, even the best products - you always have to think about how to launch serial production."

"This means that many great designs created by our volunteers and now being used in Ukraine may not survive the scaling-up phase. This knowledge - in technology production - will soon be extremely in demand and even scarce."

What the comments above indicate is that many volunteers do not have capacity to truly scale up their ops, given the Russian MOD's emphasis on its own UAV products. See this thread:

Yet another Russian effort to mass-produce FPV drones - St. Petersburg-based design bureau developed "Hydrangea" (Гортензия) drone with a range of 3km and 2kg payload, with over 2,000 drones already delivered to the front. t.me/uav_tech/17890



The design bureau claims to manufacture 3000 of these Hydrangea per month, or 120 per day. The name may be an "homage" to Geran, a "flowery" name given to Shahed-136 drones Russia procured from Iran. This may be the most mass-scale Russian FPV effort to date.

Russia's Project Archangel is testing an FPV drone with a plywood frame that can carry 2kg. Earlier, DroneZ project also started manufacturing such frames.

"Daily" FPV drone deliveries from Russia's Sudoplatov volunteer effort. This initiative is now working with VDV (Airborne Forces) to assemble these drones directly for the service.

Re. FPV drone cost - this Ukrainian efforts used 6 drones in this attack that cost $2100 total, or just $350 per drone. A Russian effort quoted above notes that FPVs should cost no more than $440, so this is in the ballpark.

Another Russian DIY FPV effort that builds drones out of plywood: this drone was designed in March 2023, tested in May, used in combat in June 2023 and mass production is launched in July this year, with 300 delivered to the front so far. t.me/kb70ru/511

On a related note, another Russian Telegram channel noted that "...we (Russian forces) will soon see an avalanche-like increase in strikes using this (FPV) weapon. The Lancet will be the long arm and a flagship kamikaze drone at operational depth, while the FPV drones will take over tactical depths. But the most important thing is a geometric progression in the growth of professional drone operators. Soon such FPV crews will be not only in Special Forces, infantry or UAV companies, but also among ordinary motorized rifle battalions."

"Carbon is an electrically conductive material. If your FPV drone model has exposed wires, it could cause a short through the frame. Carbon also blocks radio frequencies, for example, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz, so you can’t hide antennas in the frame, they have to stick out."

A Russian state TV on the soldiers using Sudoplatov volunteer effort's FPV drones - the one in the video features a high-explosive fragmentation charge. The soldier says they use a quadcopter to conduct recon first and review the video later to ID targets for FPVs.

A Russian Telegram channel commented on the "professionalization" of volunteer drone efforts in three major areas: "First, a noticeable trend towards the transition from a simple purchase of things to the production of specialized products, "sharpened" for the needs of the front."

"That is, a thoughtful study of the experience and wishes of the (military) end user and manufacturing products for a specific request. Second, the systematization of the approach and a sharp transition to a qualified purchase of spare parts, materials and components abroad."

"This is primarily about (parts from) China and other countries of Southeast Asia. Third, the volunteer legal experience and qualifications have grown. Volunteers learned how to work with documents correctly: make requests, prepare reports, draw up accompanying papers for cargo, etc."

"They (volunteers) also provide legal support when needed. We can say that we all understood how to fight the domestic bureaucracy on its own territory. This skill is essential for the implementation of any systemic solution."

The point about fighting Russia's bureaucracy is an interesting one - there were instances of volunteers openly saying they don't want to work with Russian bureaucrats. It seems they are learning how to navigate that process.

Russia's Izvestia state TV report on an FPV combat unit - the soldiers are flying a modified FPV that is nearly silent while in flight, use the repeater for signal strength, and fly the drone for the first several hundred feet at a very low altitude, along forest paths.

This appears to be yet another volunteer initiative - Russia’s state TV visited an assembly effort for “Gastello” FPV drones. Currently, they are only 30% full of domestic parts, and “are made based on lessons from the front”.

From February 2023 - this volunteer efforts from St. Petersburg, Russia, claimed to assemble 100 such FPV drones per month. This effort later moved to Wagner Center. If this initiative is still around, its likely to assemble more drones by now. t.me/bdrkka/1638

Russia's Sudoplatov volunteer effort is reporting its progress in centralizing and professionalizing their efforts: "(Our) VT-40 drone is one of the most optimal FPV models in terms of price/quality ratio, and allows operators to work with different 1.3-3 kg ammunition at an average distance of 7-10 km or more."

One of many typical requests to Russian volunteers via Telegram for FPV and quadcopter drones. Such requests used to be only about getting DJI Mavic drones - now FPVs are in massive demand.

While some Russian volunteer efforts like KatyaValya travel to China and import components and drones directly from the country, other efforts like Rokot-Tsentr complain about not having access to same parts and being forced to buy them at higher prices in Russia.

In what has become a common theme in this war, small drone design and assembly efforts are operating right at the front. At 3:00 in the embedded video, this Russian volunteer effort is assembling loitering drones that can carry a 4kg warhead. t.me/uav_tech/22005

A few still from the video above - the "budget Lancet" looks like a very cheap version that nonetheless can fly the distance. Unclear what its combat results are in actually destroying equipment. But the point is now volunteers can build lethal drones very cheap and very fast.


The camera on this kamikaze drone is towards the tail section, while the explosive charge - an RPG warhead or another munition - is inserted/affixed into the pipe at the front. It wont fly far, but can use GPS coordinates to get to target, according to the designer in the video.

The video shows what looks like another DIY FPV version made from styrofoam - for ISR and combat. This particular drone will have a two battery pack for a flight of up to 1.5 hours. There are other drones/FPVs assembled at this shop as well.


A long video from the "Sudoplatov - Judgment Day" volunteer effort (one of the largest in Russia) advertising its FPV drone assembly, production and pilot training capabilities. Its main FPV drone can range up to 15km carrying a 3kg munition. More details in posts below.

This "Sudoplatov-Judgment Day" effort claims to manufacture more than 1000 FPV drones daily across its 20 enterprises, with 5 engineering centers providing solutions based on the feedback from the front, with most components "import-substituted" by now.

There is an MOD representative at the Sudoplatov assembly location who says that this effort's FPV drone is the most "optimal" without equals in the field, and it can be "mass-produced" across Russia.

The FPV drone in question is shown during test flights, with large stacks of assembled drones in the background.

Most importantly, the MOD representative in the video said that after volunteers and their private supporters demonstrated how this works, "the MOD took over the effort." Unclear what that means. Also, this effort operates high-tech (imported?) machinery - see images.

This news report (above) notes that there are now Russian FPV pilots going through Sudoplatov training as well. The woman interviewed has a callsign "Phoenix." The report shows another pilot, callsign "Radio Operator", saying that there are now many women at the front who want to pilot FPVs.
