Sukuna proves once more why his Domain Expansion is “DIVINE.” Not only does it defy Jujutsu logic, but an unclosed barrier eliminates weaknesses of closed barriers
I’ll use my own translations for this chapter to explain bc precise wording matters to a writer like Gege #JJK225
First, a refresher from Ch. 119:
"Malevolent Shrine differs from other Domains in that it does not separate space from its barrier.
Materializing an Innate Domain without closing its barrier is equivalent to painting art not on a canvas, but on air.
A truly divine technique.”
DE is, for most sorcerers, a barrier technique that closes off a volume in real space & creates a new "space" to materialize its Domain
The barrier is essentially this new space & has a new volume. The CT is also imbued into the barrier; it’s what gives rise to the sure-hit
However, Sukuna's Domain does not separate itself, or close off, from its surroundings. He can materialize a Domain directly on the existing space/barrier around him
The air becomes the barrier, & the barrier becomes the air itself
Closing a barrier means creating a "shell" (外殻). This shell is strong inside but fragile outside. And inside, it's almost impossible to locate the shell bc of a closed Domain's vast volume
An open barrier has no "shell." Instead, it expands the effective range of its sure-hit
It can’t create a vast volume “inside,” but gets a vast volume anyways thanks to a Binding Vow
A clash (押し合い) of closed DEs is a clash of shells. Expanding a Domain inside another Domain means the 2 shells will clash from the inside, shown in Jogo vs. Gojo & told by Tengen
On the other hand, the clash between an open vs. closed-barrier DE is a two-stage game:
Inside Gojo’s barrier, “they are in opposition. The two’s guaranteed hit commands overlap and cancel each other out.
A battle where both expand their Domains together.“
Outside Gojo's barrier... or real space, is Sukuna's innate Domain & Gojo's Domain shell
Unfortunately, that shell becomes an CE-based object waiting to get Cleaved away. There is no clash, just a one-sided beatdown of a shell weak against outside attacks
The difference between an open & closed-barrier Domain is like Heaven & Earth
An open barrier dismisses the shell completely, while still having vast enough volume for its sure-hit. It maintains the advantages of a closed barrier while getting rid of its glaring weaknesses
The method of expanding a Domain without closing its barrier remains a secret for now. But I believe that the construct always present at its center, for both Sukuna & Kenjaku, must play a role in it
I look forward to its revelation. Without a doubt, a truly Divine technique
