'The Book of the Law': The Mythos Behind Thelema 🧵

In March of 1904, Aleister Crowley was visiting Egypt on honeymoon with his New Bride Rose. Little did Crowley know, this Trip was about to change not just his life and HIS+STORY but, quite possibly, the course of ALL History.

Crowley would soon superfluously be labeled the "Most Wicked Man Alive".

Although he was just Married, Crowley was at a Low Point in his life after the collapse of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn only a year earlier in 1903. He was disillusioned with Magick at this point.

Nevertheless, disillusioned or not, Crowley being Crowley still performed a ritual as a demonstration for his new bride, and was very surprised when she entered trance and began to shout: "They are waiting for you!" and saying, “It is all about the CHILD. He who waits is HORUS.”

Crowley took his New Bride to the Boulak Museum in Cairo, he tested Rose by asking her to show him an image of Horus, and he almost laughed as she passed by several steles with Horus's Image.

But, suddenly, she pointed to a glass case & insisted this is why they came to Egypt.

Rose was pointing at a small funerary stele from the XXVIth Dynasty for a priest of ancient Thebes named Ankh-af-na-Khonsu.

But probably more important for Crowley was that this artifact was listed in the museum catalogue as Stele #666 & became known as the 'Stele of Revealing'.

The Stele depicted an enthroned hawk-headed sun-god Horus with the priest making offerings before him; above them are a falcon-winged solar disk and the surrounding image of Nuit, goddess of the heavens, framing the rest of the stele.

Crowley was able to acquire a translation of the text from Stele #666 & devised what he called 'The Ritual of Invocation According to the Divine Vision of W. the Seer', and performed the ritual on March 20th, the Vernal Equinox which became known as the 'Equinox of the Gods'.

The result of this Ritual changed his life, the course of Modern Occult and Magical Theory and, quite possibly, changed the course of the Cosmos.

This is the Foundation Mythos of Thelema, Crowley's Magickal & Philosophical System would go on to be known as the 93 Current.

It must be mentioned that Crowley’s view of Magick and Mythology was heavily influenced by Éliphas Lévi whom Crowley claimed as a previous incarnation.

Ancient Egyptian Mythology became central to the Thelemic Pantheon & Mythos.

After the Equinox of the Gods, Crowley's New Bride Rose continued to insist that forces from beyond were seeking to contact him, and directed him to perform a ritual in a room with many mirrors, a ritual entirely different from his Golden Dawn training.

He summarized the Ritual as, “To be performed before a window open to the E. or N. without incense. The room to be filled with jewels, but only diamonds to be worn. A sword, unconsecrated, 44 pearl beads to be told. Stand. Bright daylight at 12.30 noon. Lock doors. White robes."

He continued, " Bare feet. Be very loud. Saturday. Use the Sign of Apophis and Typhon.”

At the hours of noon on April 8th, 9th & 10th in the year of 1904, Aleister Crowley received the transmission known as 'Liber AL vel Legis': 'The Book of the Law' in Cairo, the City of Light.

Liber AL vel Legis or the Book of Law is broken into three chapters. Although the entire book is understood to be delivered by the disembodied voice of an Entity known as 'Aiwass', a Messenger of Horus or Hoor-Paar-Kraat, each chapter is spoken from a certain perspective.

The first chapter is spoken by Nuit, who is "Infinite Space and the Infinite Stars thereof." (Infinite Space Infinite Stars = I.S.I.S.) She is depicted symbolically on the Stele of Revealing as the night sky, the Queen of Heaven, arched over the winged disk and figures below.

The second chapter is spoken by Hadit, the unextended omnipresent point at the core of every star at the center of the infinite circumference (Nuit).

The third chapter is spoken by Ra-Hoor-Khuit or specifically Heru-Ra-Ha symbolized by the Twins Harpocrates and Horus.

Crowley announced that the Heirophant of the New Aeon was Horus (Heru), specifically Horus the Child, this was New Aeon was of the Crowned & Conquering Child.

The conceptual framework from which this paradigm emerges is based upon the notion of a procession of symbolic periods.

In human history, the first Aeon or Age was the Age of Isis the Great Mother goddess, the time of paganism and shamanism, hunting and tribal life; followed by the now, fortunately, ending Age of Osiris the Father god, when monotheism, revealed religions and cities took hold.

Now, according to The Book of the Law, we are entering the Age of Horus the Child, a time of both rapidly advancing technology and magical revival, freedom from dogmatic religion. The Central Theme of the Aeon is the True Will.

"Do What Thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law."

The central philosophy of Thelema is in two phrases from Liber AL: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law" and "love is the law, love under will."

The two primary terms in these statements are 'will' and 'love', respectively.

Thelema is the Greek Word for WILL.

Using the Greek technique of isopsephy, which applies a numerical value to each letter, the letters of words Thelema ('Will') & Agape ('Love') each sum to 93:

Thelema: Θελημα = 9+5+30+8+40+1 = 93

Agapé: Αγαπη = 1 + 3 + 1 + 80 + 8 = 93

Hence, the 93 93/93 Thelemic Current.

Utterance 589 of the Ancient Pyramid Texts reads, “O King, you are the essence of all the gods, and Horus has protected you, you having become the essence of him.”

The Book of Law would go on to Change Crowley's Life and his influence is seen to this very day.
