Reading Between The Lines

The Hidden Implications of Chapter 1089

Chapter 1089 has revealed a lot of new information to us, but there are many things that went unsaid and were not shown.

This thread will focus on 'reading between the lines' & identifying the unspoken implications within this chapter.

Let's get in to it.

Many people will be familiar with the story telling technique of 'show don't tell.' This is a common method of building suspense in story telling. However, Oda often likes to do the reverse. 'tell don't show.'

The first such implication comes at the start of the chapter.

This scene highlights the fact that Woop Slap has in depth knowledge of the legends surrounding Garp. This makes sense, as he would have been around at the time.

Like Sengoku, Woop Slap is one of the few remaining individuals who will remember the events of God Valley.

The next implications come from the locations that are shown to be affected by the earthquake.

The first is Loguetown, "the town of the beginning and the end." The place where Roger was born & died.

To me, this is a signal that the the end of the story has now truly begun.

The second island shown is a tropical island in South Blue. This seems to be the island of Baterilla. The place where Ace was born.

The place where Roger was born is followed immediately by the place where his son was born.

The next islands shown to be affected are Kano Country, the home of Sai, and an unnamed island in the North Blue. This may be Notice Island, birthplace of Bellamy.

The unspoken implication here seems to be that these are the homes of Luffy's allies.

Next we see that the earthquake is also felt at the Reverse Mountain, Water 7, New Marineford & Wano.

The most noticeable thing here is that Water 7 is where Pluton was made & Wano is where it rests.

This is a set up for Pluton to be released.

The reference to Laboon also implicates Crocus, continuing the pattern of references to Roger.

Combined with the implications of Pluton. This points toward the eventual destruction of the Red Line.

Going back slightly, there is another implication within the narrator's dialogue.

Here it is stated that no earthquake 'in recorded history' has matched the one felt that day.

This implies that something similar has happened, but it was erased from history.

The Void Century.

Next, the scene cuts to Impel Down, but we do not see Doflamingo's reaction.

This is definitely intentional by Oda, and it points toward Doflamingo having knowledge of what is happening.

We know already that Doffy has knowledge of the secrets of Mariejois.

When we cut to Lulusia Kingdom, we see the aftermath of the Mother Flame weapon that has apparently caused this global disaster.

There is nothing left there but a giant void in the ocean.

This is an omen for a 'New Void.' Imu's intention to repeat the Void Century.

We also see Ivankov and the Revolutionary Army reacting to the rising sea levels. The most direct implications we can take from this is that Ivankov's meeting with Sabo & Dragon has ended.

Sabo and Dragon are on the move!

As we see the full scale of this disaster, it becomes apparent that this event is causing a global flood on a bibical scale.

The myth of the 'Great Flood' is known to many through the Book of Genesis. It is the basis of the story of Noah's Ark.

This implicates the FMI prophecy.

The next thing that stood out to me is how Kizaru describes himself as 'just a cog in the machine.'

This reminded me of when Law destroyed the SAD factor, and declared that the new generation will 'smash your gears' holding the Balance of Power together.

Nobody can stop it!

Next, we see Saturn reaction to the latest newspaper. On the surface, this serves as a confirmation that Morgan's report is intentional fact news, design to gain favour from the World Government & dissuade them from sending assassins after him again.

Beneath the surface, this also means that the Gorosei have now seen the news that Garp has been captured by the Blackbeard Pirates.

This leads directly to Blackbeard's plan to use a Marine Hero as a bargaining chip to gain his own kingdom.

Speaking of the Blackbeard Pirates, this leads us to the next unspoken implication.

We saw previously that one of Blackbeard's ships was arriving at Egghead.

Where are they now? Devon has the power to take on other people's appearances.

Could there be an imposter is among us?

The mention of the 'Fusion Reactor' is also very interesting. This essentially confirms that the Mother Flame is a nuclear weapon.

This is amazingly contemporary, not only for the recent Oppenhemier film, but also because progress in this science was reported just yesterday.

The implication of nuclear energy in the One Piece world is huge, and it begins to make some pieces of the puzzle fit in to place.

A power that would upend our understanding of what is possible & a treasure that would shake the world to it's foundations. They're the same thing.

Before we conclude, let's discuss the fact that Robin & Stussy are missing from the final panel.

Most people have noticed this already, but what does it mean? And where are they?

In the case of Stussy, it was stated previously that Lucci intends to fight her because of her betrayal.

It seems that this would also explain why Kaku is not there. Because he is attempting to keep Lucci & Stussy apart.

This is a fight we can look forward to

But what about Robin? Why is she not with everyone else?

The simplest explanation is that Robin has found the Poneglyphs that Vegapunk was using to further the research from Ohara.

Robin has found another of the 9 "Real Poneglyphs" that combine to reveal the "True History."

What is it that this Poneglyph reveals? This is the detail that ties everything together.

The most significant thing that Ohara discovered was an Ancient Weapon, and the name of the Ancient Kingdom!

That's all I've got for this one. Thank you for reading 🙏
