1. Monroe Doctrine (1823):
- Policy of isolationism in the sense of complete disengagement from international affairs
- Promoted non-colonization & non-intervention in the Western Hemisphere
2. Truman Doctrine (1947):
- Provided financial & military aid to Greece and Turkey to prevent the spread of communism
- Signaled the U.S. commitment to containment during the Cold War
3. Eisenhower Doctrine (1957):
- A response to regional instability in the Middle East
- Offered U.S. economic and military assistance to Middle Eastern countries to resist communist aggression
4. Nixon Doctrine (1969):
- Reflection of the U.S. strategy during the Vietnam War
- Stated that the U.S. would provide support &assistance to its allies, but they should take primary responsibility for their defense
5. Brezhnev Doctrine (1968):
- Used to justify the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968
- Asserted the Soviet Union's right to intervene in any socialist country that deviated from the communist path
6. Carter Doctrine (1980):
- Declared that the USA would use military force if necessary to defend its interests in the Persian Gulf region.
- Responded to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan & concerns about energy security
7. Bush Doctrine (2002):
- Part of the post-9/11 U.S. foreign policy.
- Emphasized pre-emptive military action against states or groups that posed a threat to the United States, as seen in the invasion of Iraq in 2003
