Short thread on self-reported [all the usual caveats apply] happiness over time, according to the GSS. Beginning with sex: men seem to have been doing well in the 90s. Women have been getting worse almost monotonically since 1970.
Whites have been getting less happy, blacks happier, though in absolute terms whites are still much happier. Not sure if the same number means the same thing to both groups, but the trends over time should be accurate.
There is a large gap between the married and the unmarried. The unmarried seem to have been doing better in the 90s. Most long-term decline in happiness is explained by people moving from the married to the unmarried category [much like fertility, actually].
Most of the change over time is people from the happy to the indifferent category, rather than happy to sad.
As usual, conservatives report being happier then liberals.
