Citizens of Athens-Clarke County did not hold back this morning when Mayor Kelly Girtz doubled down on his claim that Athens is not a sanctuary city.
They’re right. Athens does have sanctuary policies. And the receipts are everywhere. A thread: 🧵
2/ In 2019, the Athens City Council passed a resolution “to foster a community where individuals and families of all statuses feel safe,” so that “all people, including those WITHOUT documentation, feel welcome and comfortable.”
Hear it from Mayor Girtz himself:
3/ Prior to 2019, Athens actually had a policy of compliance with ICE. That changed after backlash from activists and pressure from Mayor Girtz & now-District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez.
“Every immigrant is a friend,” Gonzalez said at 2018 open-borders rally:
4/ Meanwhile, Athens Sheriff John Williams campaigned on REFUSING to cooperate with ICE detainers.
“We won’t be contributing to that culture of fear,” he promised in 2020:
5/ Upon taking office in 2021, DA Gonzalez said her charging decisions would “take into account collateral consequences to undocumented immigrants.”
No surprise from someone who wants to ABOLISH ICE:
6/ While it’s the federal government’s job to secure our borders, state law enforcement must hold local officials accountable when they violate the law. Our cities cannot be safe havens for violent, illegal aliens at the expense of law-abiding citizens.
Like Biden & Harris, many of these officials will be on the ballot in Nov. - and like our incompetent federal officials, voters must vote them out.
