Citizens of Athens-Clarke County did not hold back this morning when Mayor Kelly Girtz doubled down on his claim that Athens is not a sanctuary city.
They’re right. Athens does have sanctuary policies. And the receipts are everywhere. A thread: 🧵
2/ In 2019, the Athens City Council passed a resolution “to foster a community where individuals and families of all statuses feel safe,” so that “all people, including those WITHOUT documentation, feel welcome and comfortable.”
Hear it from Mayor Girtz himself:
3/ Prior to 2019, Athens actually had a policy of compliance with ICE. That changed after backlash from activists and pressure from Mayor Girtz & now-District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez.
“Every immigrant is a friend,” Gonzalez said at 2018 open-borders rally:
4/ Meanwhile, Athens Sheriff John Williams campaigned on REFUSING to cooperate with ICE detainers.
“We won’t be contributing to that culture of fear,” he promised in 2020:
5/ Upon taking office in 2021, DA Gonzalez said her charging decisions would “take into account collateral consequences to undocumented immigrants.”
No surprise from someone who wants to ABOLISH ICE:
6/ While it’s the federal government’s job to secure our borders, state law enforcement must hold local officials accountable when they violate the law. Our cities cannot be safe havens for violent, illegal aliens at the expense of law-abiding citizens.
Like Biden & Harris, many of these officials will be on the ballot in Nov. - and like our incompetent federal officials, voters must vote them out.

Small businesses in Georgia & across America have faced unprecedented challenges this year, but I couldn’t be prouder of their resilience — and I hope you’ll support a small business or two in your area today. #gapol#gasen
Around half of Georgia’s jobs are created by small businesses, and when the pandemic hit, @Perduesenate and I took bold action to help them get back on their feet. #gapol#gasen
We secured $14.5 billion in relief for more than 174,000 Georgia small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program.
These efforts saved 1.5 million Georgia jobs & covered 86% of our state’s small business payroll. #gapol#gasen
.@splcenter is a group with no credibility that lashes out at conservatives, including @realDonaldTrump — and the @ajc has chosen to repeat their talking points.
I’m heartbroken over the murder of 8 year old Secoriea Turner in Atlanta on Saturday night. Jeff & I are praying for her family, her friends, and her loved ones. We urge anyone with information to please come forward. (1/6)
I’m also furious. I’m furious that elected officials with a radical agenda have decided to appease violent criminals instead of protecting the public. And I’m furious that these “leaders” refuse to support law enforcement at a time when they need it most. (2/6)
.@ga_dps was vandalized & an 8 year old was murdered on Saturday — a day meant to celebrate what makes America great. Others were injured & last night a 53 year old was murdered too. The defund the police movement — and those who support & appease it — deserve blame. (3/6)
