2/ 🧐 In our scoping review, we found 1348 studies on digital tech, family dynamics, generational research, and relationality to find answer and narrowed down to 53 publications.
3/ From the evidence, we infer two main themes:
1.Platformised connectedness, intimacy and care
2. Power struggles and ruptures of platformised relationality
4/ But we also spotted some key knowledge gaps:
- Lack of studies on multigenerational family experiences, especially involving older individuals
- Limited understanding of the nuanced impact of digital platforms
5/ Most studies didn't differentiate between specific platform roles (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram) or delve into the nature of digital devices, products, and services beyond their facilitation of familial practices.
6/ 🚀 Future research could dive deeper into how technology not only builds and mediates relationships but also platformises them, creating immersive digital experiences within families. #DigitalFamily
7/ 🌟 Our project, PlatFAMs, explores digital platform embeddedness in modern families across five European countries. Stay tuned for updates! 🌍lse.ac.uk/media-and-comm…
8/ 📈 Our team will be addressing key gaps in the literature through multi-generational research, enriching empirical and theoretical understandings of platformisation and families #PlatFAMs
