1/🔍 New Article Alert in the @FRSjournal! 📚 How do digital technologies become embedded in family life across generations? 🤔 Check out our findings in this thread! @EUCHANSE @MediaLSE

2/ 🧐 In our scoping review, we found 1348 studies on digital tech, family dynamics, generational research, and relationality to find answer and narrowed down to 53 publications.
3/ From the evidence, we infer two main themes:

1.Platformised connectedness, intimacy and care

2. Power struggles and ruptures of platformised relationality
4/ But we also spotted some key knowledge gaps:

- Lack of studies on multigenerational family experiences, especially involving older individuals

- Limited understanding of the nuanced impact of digital platforms
5/ Most studies didn't differentiate between specific platform roles (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram) or delve into the nature of digital devices, products, and services beyond their facilitation of familial practices.
6/ 🚀 Future research could dive deeper into how technology not only builds and mediates relationships but also platformises them, creating immersive digital experiences within families. #DigitalFamily
7/ 🌟 Our project, PlatFAMs, explores digital platform embeddedness in modern families across five European countries. Stay tuned for updates! 🌍lse.ac.uk/media-and-comm…
8/ 📈 Our team will be addressing key gaps in the literature through multi-generational research, enriching empirical and theoretical understandings of platformisation and families #PlatFAMs

1/ Thread: Our report with @NSPCC is the first in six years to reflect on available evidence about children’s safety online. This is part 2/2 of my threads explaining the findings. #ChildSafety #OnlineSafetyAct #EvidenceBased #ChildOnlineProtection @MediaLSE #UnitedKingdom 🧑‍💻🔍 Image
2/ When it comes to design features & harm exposure, alarming trends emerge as recommender can algorithms steer children into risky domains. Popularity metrics can also incentivise time online, increasing exposure. #OnlineHarm #DigitalWellbeing 🚨💻
3/ Harm reduction: Design tools like age verification & parental controls can help resist harm, but robust application, child privacy and voice, and careful contextualisation is vital. Children need to have good reporting and blocking features #TrustAndSafety #Policymaking 🔒👨‍👧

🧵 What factors support young people’s #digitalwellbeing?

Our review paper in @EurPsychol_jour synthesises research about #onlinerisk, #harms, #resilience & #digitalliteracy to discuss key facilitators. @ySKILLS_eu @MediaLSE @CORE_H2020 Image
@EurPsychol_jour @ySKILLS_eu @MediaLSE @CORE_H2020 Literature about these young people's digital life resides in separate bodies of literature (eg: in terms of risks, literacy, harm, skills etc.). Our review synthesises them into an integrated research framework to guide further research.
@EurPsychol_jour @ySKILLS_eu @MediaLSE @CORE_H2020 Our search found 1,379 studies which we narrowed down to 30 based on criteria detailed on pg. 5.

In a new systematic evidence review,@JoyceVissenberg @LeendHaenens @Livingstone_S @ySKILLS_eu integrate research on youth digital literacy, wellbeing, online risks & resilience.

4 findings (in thread) support educating rather than overprotecting children.
yskills.eu/what-do-we-kno…
1/ Correlational research suggests that negative online experiences undermine young people’s wellbeing. But some studies point to a reciprocal relationship between risk (particularly cyber-victimisation) and wellbeing.
2/ Exposure to risk seems to play an essential role in the development and manifestation of online resilience. If we regard coping as itself a form of digital literacy, this helps explain why digitally literate young people encounter more risks online.
