The @APPF_EU unveiled the latest official MEP membership figures for #europeanparties, which will be used to calculate their entitlements to EU public funding. Here is what's what 👇
❌ Worthy of note: sharp nose-dive for virtually all pro-EU forces: @EPP, @PES_PSE, @ALDEParty, @europeangreens, @PDE_EDP, and EFA (even @europeanleft).
Only net winner: the @LeftAlliance_EU, but mostly because it starts from zero.
❌ Conversely, the winners (except ELA) are all on the hard/far-right: @PatriotsEU, @ECRparty, and ESN.
Paradox of the funding system: both the @EPP and @PES_PSE actually increase their number of MEPs, but are net losers in European public funding. This is because #europeanparties share a fixed amount, instead of receiving 💶 per MEP (or, better, per vote).
Rewarding each MEP (or vote) with 💶 would incentivise #europeanparties to try and increase overall party membership. But this should come with a requirement that MEPs are actually members of European parties, and not just of a member party. And are given voting/decision rights.
In terms of percentages, @EPP and @PES_PSE are largely stable. @ALDEParty and @europeangreens each trade 2-3 % points with @PatriotsEU and @ECRparty. Newcomers ESN and @LeftAlliance_EU made comfortable arrivals.
Reminder 1: these amounts are the result of the "distribution key", but #europeanparties may actually be entitled to less funding if their draft budget is more limited (they can get max 90% of their reimbursable costs) or if they simply ask for less money.
Reminder 2: entitlement amounts are what #europeanparties are *entitled to* -- the maximum amount they can get. In the end, if they end up spending less than planned (in reimbursable costs), they will also receive less. That's assessed when accounts are closed, in year N+2.
