Only net winner: the @LeftAlliance_EU, but mostly because it starts from zero.

@euleftalliance @APPF_EU @EDC_eudemocracy Today, @POLITICOEurope's Playbook reports on two EU political alliances missing out on EU funds "because the paperwork is too complicated". A great opportunity to discuss the funding of #europeanparties. 🇪🇺 A quick 🧵 @euleftalliance @APPF_EU @EDC_eudemocracy First of all, what are we talking about? This is about a special stream of European public funding set aside for #europeanparties and distributed every year. Out of that envelope, 10% is distributed equally to all parties and 90% proportionally to their number of MEPs. 2/23

A victory for #transparency!! 💪🇪🇺
@EDC_eudemocracy paved for the way for information on #europeanparties to be available from the @Europarl_EN to citizens without delay!
Before, information took up to 8 years to be available in full.
@edecapitani @wouter_wolfs @POLITICOEurope A victory for #transparency... Over the past several years, @EDC_eudemocracy has made many, many requests to the European Parliament to access decisions by its Bureau on the funding of #europeanparties. These included decisions for funding (for the coming year) and final accounts (which wrap up the process).

🔥Today, @Europarl_EN's Committee on Constitutional Affairs (#AFCO) will discuss #transnationallists. Here is why they may not be the good idea we think they are. A thread 👇 1/25
@EPInstitutional @Antonio_Tajani @guyverhofstadt @sandrogozi @d_boeselager @daniel_freund @inside_ep Many have endorsed TNLs as the way to make our elections more #European, from pro-#EU groups (@federalists, @EMInternational), to politicians (@EmmanuelMacron, @vonderleyen) & advocates (@jonworth, @alemannoEU, @AndrewDuffEU). They argue TNLs will bring a European dimension. 2/25

I have a feeling this tweet will soon be quite applicable to @vonderleyen’s State of the Union.
#SOTEU 🇪🇺 ✅ Health Union: check
✅ Economic and Monetary Union: check
✅ Capital Markets Union: check
✅ Industrial Union: check
Getting there!

Such is the absurdity of the “1 country-1 commissioner” rule. #IamEuropean
politico.eu/newsletter/bru… Of course, "the @EU_Commission shall be completely independent" and "the members of the Commission shall neither seek nor take instructions from any Government". (Art. 17.3 TEU #LisbonTreaty). So there should be no need for #1country1commissioner rule. #IamEuropean 🇪🇺

When we talk about simplifying administrative processes (#smartstate), we don't mean "big" things, just a collection of small things that contribute to making people's lives needlessly more complicated, especially abroad. Here's a silly example with a birth registration. 👇 1/7 A child is born in #Austria and registered with local authorities. Local authorities issue, for free, an original Austrian birth certificate in German and are thoughtful enough to include, for free, an original international birth certificate in multiple languages. 2/7

Today, European Democracy Consulting lodged an official complaint with the @EUombudsman against the Authority for #EuropeanParties over its implementation of transparency requirements.

Why is this important? A short thread 👇 1/14
eudemocracy.eu/edc-takes-auth… The APPF was set up in 2014 to register, control and sanction European parties & foundations. It is the #EU’s party monitoring body and watchdog. As such, it has a key role for anything relating to #EuropeanParties. 2/14

Brilliant and must-read piece on the distinction between European sovereignty and #Europeandemocracy, and the importance of the latter.
By @nicolasleron via @GEG_org (non-French speakers 👉 Deepl). 1/4
legrandcontinent.eu/fr/2020/05/25/… TL:DR The call for a European sovereignty will not solve the EU's continued problems & crises. Only the construction of a true #Europeandemocracy, based on a real fiscal & budgetary capacity, can give EU citizens the means to decide & act. No representation without taxation. 2/4

Interesting report by @EPInstitutional & @PDurandOfficiel on #EP2019 elections, in particular on the need for more #genderbalance, reform of @EUCouncil and of the #spitzenkandidat system, and the role of #Europeanparties.
BUT.... a short thread 👇 1/9
europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document… #Genderbalance is essential and political parties must be required to submit *gender-alternate* lists, where no two consecutive candidates can be of the same gender. This is one more reason to harmonise voting modalities at the EU level and not leave them up to Member States. 2/9

Interesting read about #EmmanuelMacron's vision for Europe and concept of European power, by @RymMomtaz via @POLITICOEurope.
A few comments in this thread👇 #IamEuropean 🇪🇺
politico.eu/article/emmanu… "The idea was to create a strategy of influence, which means we can [...] write papers with other countries." Then why don't you? Why the total opposition to #Spitzenkandidat and not reform it? Why the solo position on #NorthMacedonia? Or the solo tribune before #EUelections?

.@VMalingre notes (via @lemondefr) that 3 #EU States have #French as official language, but only 2 have #English (post #Brexit). Should French replace English as the default language in EU institutions? 🇪🇺 Quick thread on voting systems👇 #IamEuropean
lemonde.fr/international/… A simple first-past-the-post vote in the @EUCouncil on which language to use would probably see each country voting for its own language. 3 would vote for French 🇫🇷, 2 for English 🇬🇧. French wins. But, can we really expect this decision to be consensual and accepted?

🔥Thread for those not well-versed in #EU topics.
"The EU" (@EU_Commission) proposes a #GreenDeal to make the EU carbon-neutral by 2050, and "the EU" (@Europarl_EN) seems to support it. Now, "countries" (@EUCouncil) need to support it. #IamEuropean
politico.eu/article/the-co… So, let's be clear: if this #GreenDeal fails, or passes in a watered-down version that empties it from its substance, it will not be "the EU"'s fault; it will be on "the countries". National leaders, currently attending a Council meeting, are the make-or-break force. #IamEuropean

Yesterday, the Presidents of the #EuropeanParliament, #EuropeanCommission, #EuropeanCouncil and #ECB celebrated the 10 years of the #LisbonTreaty. It marked a step forward, yet the #EU remains blocked by unanimity and has not strengthened its democracy.
10 years after the #LisbonTreaty and despite a provision to the contrary, we are still forced to have exactly one Commissioner per Member State -- with no considerations for the efficiency of our #EU governance.

" 'No treaty changes' was supported by almost everyone, except France and Germany" at EU ambassadors' meeting.
Because of course Member States oppose #treatychange which would undoubtedly shift power to #EUParliament. Such short-sightedness! #IamEuropean
politico.eu/article/eu-amb… EU ambassadors also expressed the fear that "the whole process [would] be hijacked by the European Parliament". Yes, god forbid that the people's representatives (recently elected during our only #European election) lead a process on European affairs! #IamEuropean

Listening to Foreign Min @TyttiTup explain the Finnish priorities for its presidency of the EU, I can only wonder... how do we continue to tolerate the rotating presidency of the @EUCouncil?! What gives Finland (or any country) the legitimacy to impose... 1/4 #eu2019fi its priorities on the whole of the EU? These governments may be elected at home, but not at the EU level. Their only claim to these responsibilities is an agreement among Member States that completely bypasses any principle of democracy and accountability. 2/4 #eu2019fi

For #GeorgeWashington, Great Britain waged a tariff war against the US, believing US States "never could unite in opposition to it". Until proven otherwise, the US would remain "in a ridiculous point of view in the eyes of the nations of the earth".
